Ola Electric has become the first automotive manufacturer in India to receive official certification for a ferrite-based motor developed entirely in-house. Unlike traditional electric motors that use rare-earth permanent magnets, this ferrite motor eliminates the need for imported materials, offering a significant step forward in localizing EV technology.

The certification was issued by the Global Automotive Research Centre (GARC) in Tamil Nadu after the motor passed all required tests under AIS 041 standards, set by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. These tests confirmed that the motor delivers comparable performance to rare-earth-based motors, specifically in the 7kW and 11kW categories.

Ola Electric first introduced the ferrite motor during its ‘Sankalp 2025’ event held in August. With certification now in place, the company plans to begin installing the new motor across its range of electric two-wheelers. The transition is expected to reduce production costs, improve supply chain stability, and offer customers a more affordable and sustainable mobility solution.

The ferrite motor is designed to match rare-earth motor performance in power output, efficiency, and durability—while relying on more readily available materials. This move supports India’s push for domestic manufacturing in the electric mobility sector.

Ola Electric Mobility Limited is a key player in India’s electric vehicle sector, with operations spanning vehicle production, battery development, and core EV components. Its main production site, the Ola Futurefactory in Tamil Nadu, is one of the country’s largest EV manufacturing facilities.

The company also operates a Battery Innovation Centre in Bengaluru and runs R&D programs in India, the UK, and the US. Ola sells directly to customers through a nationwide network of over 4,000 experience centers and an online platform, making it the largest company-owned retail network in the Indian EV industry.
