Oil India Limited (OIL) has successfully completed the capping of Well KSG-76 at the Kharsang Oil Field in Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh. The field is operated by GeoEnpro Petroleum Ltd (GEPL). This achievement marks the successful conclusion of a complex well control operation initiated after a blowout on 30 October 2025 during service activities, which led to uncontrolled gas flow from the well.
OIL’s Crisis Management Team, supported by specialists from Cudd Well Control (USA) and the GEPL team, assumed control of the situation on 1 November 2025. The team immediately began preparations to remove the damaged Blowout Preventer (BOP), a task requiring exceptional precision due to the high-risk environment.
Following the safe extraction of the damaged BOP, the pre-deployed capping stack was accurately positioned and installed on the wellhead. This critical step redirected the gas flow to the top of the stack, ensuring complete containment. With the capping stack secured, the BOP was then closed, bringing the uncontrolled discharge from Well KSG-76 to a full stop.
The successful completion of the operation highlights OIL’s strong engineering capabilities, meticulous planning, and the effective teamwork between international experts and local field personnel. Subsequent steps in the well control plan will now proceed in line with established procedures.
OIL acknowledged the dedication of its Crisis Management Team, the support from Cudd Well Control, GEPL personnel, and the on-ground workforce who operated under demanding conditions. The company also expressed appreciation to the district and state authorities of Arunachal Pradesh, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, and the local community for their unwavering cooperation, which played a crucial role in the timely and safe completion of the operation. OIL reaffirmed its commitment to conducting safe, sustainable, and efficient operations across all its activities.
