Nibe Limited has successfully completed a series of technical trials for its indigenous Vayu Astra-1 Loitering Munition system in line with operational requirements issued by the Indian Army. The trials were conducted at the Pokhran firing range in Rajasthan and at high-altitude operational zones in Joshimath (Malari), Uttarakhand, showcasing the platform’s precision strike capability, endurance performance and battlefield adaptability.
The successful demonstrations mark a major milestone in India’s growing defence manufacturing ecosystem and reinforce Nibe Limited’s role in advancing next-generation indigenous military technologies under the country’s self-reliance and “Make in India” initiatives. During the anti-personnel strike trial conducted at Pokhran, the Vayu Astra-1 system successfully engaged and neutralized a target located 100 kilometers away using a 10-kilogram warhead payload. The strike was completed in a single attempt with a circular error probability of less than one meter, demonstrating exceptional precision and operational reliability. The system also validated advanced combat functionalities including abort, attack and re-attack capabilities, which are considered critical for dynamic battlefield operations and mission flexibility.
The company further conducted a successful anti-armor night strike trial utilizing an infrared camera guidance system. During the demonstration, the loitering munition accurately struck its designated target within a two-meter CEP in a single mission attempt under low-visibility conditions. The trials also showcased the platform’s command-and-control versatility through the successful transfer of operational control from the Ground Control Station to a Forward Control Station positioned approximately 70 kilometers away.
In another significant achievement, the Vayu Astra-1 completed high-altitude endurance trials in the challenging terrain of Joshimath (Malari), Uttarakhand. The loitering munition sustained flight operations for more than 90 minutes at altitudes exceeding 14,000 feet, validating its capability to operate effectively in demanding mountainous environments. Following mission completion, the platform was safely recovered for future deployment and repeated operational usage.
Nibe Limited stated that the successful trials highlight the growing maturity of India’s indigenous unmanned defence technologies and support the country’s objective of reducing dependence on imported military systems. The company continues to focus on innovation, precision engineering and integrated defence solutions aimed at strengthening India’s operational readiness and export capabilities.
