Microchip Unveils Space-Grade Clock Generator for Aerospace Applications

Microchip Technology has introduced the DSA504RT, a radiation-tolerant, six-output programmable clock generator designed to simplify spacecraft timing systems while improving performance, reliability and efficiency in aerospace and defence applications. The new device addresses one of the key challenges in spacecraft design—delivering highly stable and precise timing signals to multiple subsystems operating in harsh environments where Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals may be unavailable or disrupted. By generating multiple phase-aligned frequencies from a single master clock source, the DSA504RT reduces the need for numerous oscillators, buffers and synthesisers traditionally used in complex spacecraft architectures.

The integration of multiple timing functions into a single device enables system designers to reduce component count, minimise board space, lower power consumption and decrease overall system mass. Fewer discrete components also contribute to improved system reliability by reducing potential points of failure while simplifying clock distribution across critical onboard systems.

The DSA504RT incorporates an Analog Phase-Locked Loop (APLL) with spread-spectrum capability, two fractional dividers, two integer dividers and six programmable output buffers. Each output can be configured as a differential driver supporting LVPECL, LVDS or HCSL standards, or as paired CMOS outputs, providing flexibility across a wide range of aerospace applications.

The device delivers ultra-low jitter performance of as little as 200 femtoseconds across the 12 kHz to 20 MHz range and complies with PCI Express Gen 1 through Gen 7 standards. This allows engineers to replace multiple timing components with a single integrated solution while reducing bill of materials costs and simplifying overall system design.

Maamoun Abou Seido, Vice President of Microchip’s Timing Communications Group, said the DSA504RT significantly enhances timing architecture for space systems. “The DSA504RT delivers a complete clock tree solution capable of generating multiple clock families and up to six independent frequencies from a single device. By replacing several oscillators, buffers and synthesisers, it reduces board space, lowers component count and improves system reliability for high-dependability aerospace applications,” he said.

Available in QFN28 and CQFP32 packages, the DSA504RT is designed to work alongside radiation-tolerant and radiation-hardened field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and microcontrollers, enabling highly integrated timing architectures for next-generation spacecraft and defence platforms. The latest addition expands Microchip’s portfolio of radiation-qualified timing solutions, allowing aerospace manufacturers to remain within a single proven ecosystem while reducing qualification effort, lowering programme costs and accelerating product development for demanding space missions.
