L&T Energy Hydrocarbon Onshore has secured a significant Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract from Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd (BCGCL) for a coal-to-ammonium nitrate project in Odisha, further strengthening its leadership in India’s coal-to-chemicals sector. BCGCL is a joint venture between Coal India Ltd (CIL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL). The newly awarded contract covers Lump Sum Turnkey Package-3 for the development of an Ammonia Synthesis Unit, a key component in the integrated coal-to-chemicals value chain.
The ammonia facility will support the downstream production of nitric acid and ammonium nitrate, both of which are critical industrial chemicals with wide-ranging applications. The project is expected to enhance operational efficiency, ensure process stability, and enable seamless integration across the overall manufacturing complex.
Under the scope of the contract, L&T Onshore will undertake process licensing, basic and detailed engineering, procurement, construction, mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, commissioning, performance guarantee testing, project management, and final handover of the facility on a single-point responsibility basis. The company said the plant will be designed to deliver sustained operational performance, high reliability, improved safety standards, and long-term efficiency in line with evolving global benchmarks for ammonia production facilities.
Commenting on the order, Subramanian Sarma, Deputy Managing Director and President, L&T, said that gasification-based chemical infrastructure is becoming increasingly important for India’s industrial growth and self-reliance initiatives. He noted that the project reinforces L&T’s capabilities in handling technologically advanced and strategically important EPC assignments across the energy and chemical sectors. He further added that developing domestic ammonia production capacity through coal-based feedstock routes will contribute to supply security while supporting the growth of downstream industrial ecosystems in the country.
E S Sathyanarayanan, Senior Vice President and Head of L&T Onshore and Member of L&T’s Executive Committee, said the ammonia synthesis facility forms a vital part of the integrated coal-to-chemicals ecosystem. He highlighted that L&T’s experience in executing ammonia and fertiliser projects positions the company strongly to deliver large-scale, technology-intensive assets with consistent product quality and dependable long-term operations.
