Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has entered into a significant agreement with Siemens Mobility Switzerland for the supply of 116 six-car DesiroDoSto double-deck trains. The contract, valued at approximately CHF 2 billion, also includes an option for up to 84 additional trainsets. The new fleet is scheduled to begin operations on the Zurich S-Bahn network from 2031, supporting the region’s growing commuter demand.

Roland Busch, Chief Executive Officer of Siemens AG, stated that the agreement reflects strong confidence in Siemens’ capabilities. He emphasized that reliability, sustainability, and passenger comfort remain central to rail transport in Switzerland, adding that the project will incorporate advanced technologies while maintaining close collaboration within the country. Key phases, including project management, testing, approvals, and operational rollout, will be carried out in Switzerland.

Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility, noted that the DesiroDoSto platform builds on the established Desiro HC family, which has demonstrated consistent performance across multiple countries. With over 440 units sold and more than 200 million kilometers in service, the platform is recognized for operational reliability and efficiency. The new trains are designed to deliver enhanced capacity, comfort, and energy efficiency tailored to modern urban transit systems.

Each train will offer around 540 seats along with eight multi-purpose areas to facilitate passenger flow. Compared to earlier models, the new configuration provides approximately 30 percent more standing space and a 10 percent increase in seating capacity, making it suitable for high-traffic routes.

Passenger amenities have been upgraded to improve travel experience and accessibility. Low-floor entrances ensure easier boarding, while first-class compartments include adjustable seating, larger spacing, and fold-out tables. Charging points will be available across both travel classes, including dedicated outlets for e-bikes in multi-purpose sections. Enhanced onboard information systems, featuring larger displays and visual indicators for door operations, will assist passenger navigation. Additional emergency communication systems have also been incorporated.

The trains are designed with a focus on sustainability, incorporating energy-efficient traction systems, integrated heat pump technology, and intelligent energy management. Lightweight car bodies made from fully COâ‚‚-reduced aluminum further contribute to lower environmental impact.

Production activities will involve Siemens Mobility’s Swiss operations in Wallisellen, alongside manufacturing of car bodies in Krefeld, Germany. Testing, commissioning, and maintenance activities will be conducted in Switzerland in collaboration with local partners. This contract builds on a long-standing relationship between SBB and Siemens Mobility, which has included the deployment of Vectron locomotives supporting freight transport across Switzerland and Europe.

A separately managed company of Siemens AG, Siemens Mobility focuses on intelligent transport solutions across rail systems worldwide.
