Larsen & Toubro’s (L&T) Transportation Infrastructure business has secured major Design and Build orders for two systems packages under the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project, also known as Dhaka Metro Line 1, in Bangladesh. The orders cover Contract Package CP09 for track works and electrical systems, and Contract Package CP10 for signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors. The project will be Bangladesh’s first underground metro line.
L&T previously delivered the integrated railway systems package for Dhaka Metro Line 6, the country’s first metro corridor, which is now in commercial operation. The latest awards extend the company’s involvement in Bangladesh’s urban rail infrastructure.
Ramkumar S Senior Executive Vice President and Head of Transportation Infrastructure at L&T, said the repeat orders from Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited reflected the company’s experience in large-scale urban transit projects. He cited its work on Dhaka Metro Line 6 and the Jakarta Metro, which is currently under execution, as relevant experience in integrating complex railway systems.
Dhaka Metro Line 1 is being funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The planned network will span approximately 31 kilometres and comprise the Airport Route, running from Kamalapur to the Airport, and the Purbachal Route, extending from Natun Bazar to Purbachal Terminal. The project includes 19 stations and a depot at Pitalganj.
Under CP09, L&T and its Japanese partner, Sumitomo Corporation, will handle the design, procurement, installation, testing and commissioning of track works and electrical systems. The scope includes power supply and distribution, traction substations, the overhead catenary system and associated electrical facilities across the corridor.
Under CP10, L&T will execute the signalling and telecommunications systems and install platform screen doors across the network. These systems will form a key part of the metro’s operating infrastructure, supporting train movement, passenger information and platform safety.
The two packages are central to the operational readiness of Dhaka Metro Line 1. Their execution will require coordination between L&T, its partners, equipment manufacturers and project stakeholders. L&T’s Transportation Infrastructure business undertakes engineering, procurement and construction projects across rail and urban transit infrastructure in India and international markets. Its portfolio includes complex railway systems projects requiring integration of multiple technical components. The company said its experience in Bangladesh and other international metro projects would support delivery of the new packages. The awards add to L&T’s work in the country as Bangladesh develops its urban mass transit network.
