L&T Energy GreenTech Ltd (LTEGL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro, has entered into a long-term agreement with Japan-based ITOCHU Corporation for the supply of green ammonia, marking a key milestone in advancing clean energy collaboration between India and Japan.

Under the agreement, LTEGL will supply 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually to ITOCHU on a captive, take-or-pay basis. The supply will originate from LTEGL’s upcoming production facility in Kandla, Gujarat, which is being developed as a strategic hub for low-carbon fuel exports.

The agreement was formalised at ITOCHU’s headquarters in Tokyo by Derek M Shah, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of LTEGL, and Hiroyuki Tsubai, Executive Vice President and President of the Machinery Company at ITOCHU Corporation. Senior leadership from both organisations, including Masahiro Okafuji, Chairman and CEO of ITOCHU Corporation, and S N Subrahmanyan, Chairman and Managing Director of Larsen & Toubro, were present at the signing ceremony.

This development builds upon the Joint Development Agreement signed between the two companies in July 2025 and represents a transition from project collaboration to long-term commercial engagement. The partnership is aimed at creating a reliable and competitive green ammonia supply chain to support global decarbonisation efforts.

ITOCHU plans to utilise the green ammonia for its growing bunkering operations, particularly in Singapore, a major global hub for marine fuels. The initiative aligns with the company’s broader strategy to promote cleaner alternatives in maritime transport and reduce carbon emissions across shipping routes.

The project also supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which seeks to position the country as a leading exporter of green hydrogen and its derivatives. LTEGL’s Kandla facility is expected to play a central role in this vision by enabling large-scale production and export of sustainable fuels.

Commenting on the partnership, Subramanian Sarma, Deputy Managing Director and President at Larsen & Toubro, stated that the agreement strengthens the commercial viability of the company’s clean energy initiatives while contributing to global sustainability goals. Hiroyuki Tsubai of ITOCHU highlighted the importance of establishing dependable green ammonia supply chains to accelerate adoption in the shipping industry.

L&T Energy GreenTech continues to focus on delivering integrated solutions across the green hydrogen value chain, supported by advanced technologies and strategic alliances. ITOCHU Corporation, a leading Japanese trading company with a global presence, remains actively engaged in expanding its energy portfolio and supporting the transition to low-carbon solutions worldwide.
