Vedanta Limited has reported a significant increase in renewable energy adoption, with usage rising by over 50% to 3.97 billion units (BU) in FY26. The transition enabled the company to avoid approximately 3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions during the year, marking a key milestone in its sustainability journey.
The announcement, made on the occasion of World Earth Day, highlights Vedanta’s continued focus on integrating cleaner energy sources into its operations. The company’s diversified portfolio across metals, oil and gas, power, and critical minerals plays a vital role in supporting the global energy transition and advancing low-carbon technologies.
Vedanta’s core materials, including aluminium, copper, zinc, iron, and steel, are essential for sectors such as renewable energy, electrification, and sustainable infrastructure. Aluminium contributes to lightweight mobility and efficient power transmission, while copper is central to electrification and renewable installations. Silver supports solar photovoltaic applications, and zinc and steel remain critical to energy infrastructure development.
The company has also made measurable progress in improving operational efficiency. Its metals intensity has been reduced by 15%, declining from 6.45 tCOâ‚‚e per tonne of metal in FY21 to 5.44 tCOâ‚‚e per tonne in FY26. Additionally, Vedanta utilized 365 kilotonnes of biomass as an alternative fuel, resulting in an estimated reduction of 0.5 to 0.6 million tonnes of carbon emissions.
Efforts in water stewardship have also advanced, with businesses such as Hindustan Zinc Limited, Cairn Oil & Gas, and its iron ore division achieving net water positivity. These initiatives reflect the company’s broader commitment to embedding sustainability across operations.
Vedanta’s sustainability performance has received global recognition. Hindustan Zinc Limited secured the top position in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2026, while Vedanta Group was included in the yearbook for the third consecutive year. Vedanta Aluminium was also ranked among the top 10 global companies in the same assessment.
The company has further strengthened its ESG credentials through international certifications and initiatives, including improved ratings in water management and supplier engagement. Its product innovations, such as low-carbon aluminium offerings, and recognition for responsible mining practices underscore continued progress in sustainable operations.
With operations across India, Africa, the Middle East, and East Asia, Vedanta continues to align its growth strategy with global climate goals. The company remains committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier, while supporting industrial growth, energy security, and long-term value creation through responsible business practices.
