Jyoti Structures Limited (JSL), a listed global Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) company specialising in power transmission infrastructure, has successfully completed full-scale prototype testing of its 513th transmission tower at its Tower Testing Station in Ghoti, Nashik, Maharashtra. The test was conducted for Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) as part of the country’s 800 kV High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission programme.
The tower tested was an 800 kV HVDC Type “C” tower designed for angle deviations of 15°–30° and suitable for Wind Zone-4 conditions. Configured as a Basic Body Tower with a +0M extension, the structure weighed 45.5 metric tonnes. The testing programme was carried out in accordance with IS 802 Part III: 1978 (RA):2017 standards and covered multiple loading scenarios representing operating, safety, and maintenance conditions.
During the test sequence, the tower was subjected to several load cases including normal operational loads, safety and maintenance loads, broken wire conditions, and varied reliability requirements. The structure successfully withstood 100 percent of the prescribed loads across all test cases without any visible deformation, meeting the requirements of the applicable testing standards.
As part of the testing process, certain structural members in the Bottom X-Arm section were strengthened to further optimise the tower design. Following completion of all mandatory load conditions, a destruction test was also conducted. The tower sustained loads up to 110 percent before collapse, demonstrating the strength and structural integrity of the design.
Commenting on the achievement, Rajesh Kumar Singh, Chief Executive Officer of Jyoti Structures Limited, said the successful testing of the 513th tower highlights the company’s long-standing engineering expertise and project execution capabilities. He noted that the 800 kV HVDC programme represents one of the most technically demanding transmission initiatives in India.
While the tower design was provided by PGCIL, JSL’s team was responsible for detailed development, manufacturing, and conducting rigorous load testing to confirm performance under practical operating conditions. He added that as transmission networks expand in scale and complexity, the company’s in-house testing facilities and structured engineering processes help ensure reliability, maintain quality standards, and minimise project execution risks for clients. The successful testing forms part of JSL’s ongoing work on the 800 kV HVDC transmission project awarded by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, valued at approximately ₹741 crore including GST.
The Ghoti Tower Testing Station in Nashik is a key component of JSL’s research, development, and testing infrastructure. The facility enables the company to verify structural performance and ensure towers meet design specifications before deployment in the field, supporting efficient and reliable expansion of transmission networks.
