Jupiter Wagons Limited (JWL), through its energy business Jupiter Energy Mobility (JEM Energy), has secured two standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in Uttarakhand and West Bengal, strengthening its presence in India’s utility-scale energy storage market. JEM Energy, in partnership with Madhav Infra Projects Limited, has emerged as the L1 bidder for Cluster C of a tender floated by Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding mechanism. The project involves a 41 MW/102.5 MWh standalone BESS system, with supply and commissioning valued at approximately ₹100 crore.
JWL has also received the formal Letter of Award from West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) for a 50 MW/200 MWh standalone BESS project at the Jeerat 132 kV substation in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The project was secured in August 2026.
The two projects expand JEM Energy’s utility-scale storage portfolio and take its operations into Uttarakhand. The company said the projects are aligned with the growing role of battery storage in supporting grid stability, renewable energy integration and electricity distribution infrastructure.
The developments come after the Union Cabinet approved Green Energy Corridor Phase-III, which includes provisions for 50 GWh of battery energy storage capacity along with strengthened intra-state transmission networks. Substation-level storage projects are expected to form part of this expansion.
“Winning the Uttarakhand project and receiving the formal award for Jeerat are important steps in building JEM Energy into a scalable energy storage business. With the approval of Green Energy Corridor Phase-III, battery storage is now firmly part of how India will plan and strengthen its grid, and substation-level projects such as these are where that work begins,” the company said.
JWL reiterated its target of building a BESS order book of approximately ₹1,000 crore by FY27. The company also expects Jupiter Electric Mobility (JEM) to turn EBITDA positive in Q3 FY27 and become profitable by FY28. JEM Energy plans to participate in utility-scale as well as commercial and industrial (C&I) energy storage opportunities across India.
