JSW Steel has formally announced the development of the Minas de Revuboè (MdR) coking coal mining project in the Moatize coal basin in Tete Province, Mozambique. The announcement was made during a ceremony attended by senior government officials and representatives from India and Mozambique, highlighting the strengthening industrial collaboration between the two countries.

The event was presided over by Daniel Francisco Chapo, President of the Mozambique, and attended by Parth Jindal of the JSW Group and Robert Shetkington, the Indian High Commissioner to Mozambique. Located within the Moatize coal basin in Tete Province, the Minas de Revuboè project provides JSW Steel access to significant reserves of premium hard coking coal—an essential raw material used in steel production. The site is estimated to contain approximately 850 million tonnes of coal reserves, with the potential to produce around 250 million tonnes of usable coking coal over the life of the mine.

Development of the mine will take place in phases. The initial phase is expected to be completed within approximately two and a half years and will produce 2.4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of prime hard coking coal.

Strategically located around 10 kilometres north of Tete city, the project also benefits from proximity to key transport infrastructure. It lies about 450 kilometres north of Beira Port and roughly 900 kilometres southwest of Nacala Port, positioning it advantageously for shipments to international markets, including India.

For JSW Steel, the project represents a significant step in strengthening its backward integration strategy. Access to captive coking coal reserves is expected to provide long-term supply security for a critical raw material and help reduce exposure to volatility in global coking coal prices. India has limited domestic reserves of premium coking coal, making overseas resource development an important component of long-term supply planning for steel manufacturers.

President Daniel Francisco Chapo said the project signals Mozambique’s continued attractiveness as a destination for global investment. He noted that the development of Minas de Revuboè is expected to create a world-class mining operation and strengthen the country’s position in the international mining sector.

Parth Jindal said the project represents an important milestone for the company as it expands its global resource footprint. With JSW Steel targeting 50 million tonnes per annum of steel production capacity in India by 2030, access to high-quality coking coal from geographically strategic sources is expected to support cost optimisation and operational stability while supporting the company’s long-term growth strategy.

In addition to strengthening supply chains, high-grade coking coal from the project is expected to contribute to improved efficiency in steelmaking and support the company’s broader sustainability initiatives. Securing reliable raw material sources plays an important role in reducing emissions intensity and improving productivity across integrated steel operations.

JSW Steel Limited is the flagship company of the diversified JSW Group, which has interests across sectors including energy, infrastructure, cement, paints, mobility, defence, and venture capital. Over the past three decades, JSW Steel has expanded from a single manufacturing unit into one of India’s leading integrated steel producers, with a consolidated crude steel capacity of 35.7 million tonnes per annum, including operations in the United States. Domestic capacity currently stands at 34.2 mtpa, with expansion plans expected to increase consolidated capacity to 43.4 mtpa in the coming years.

The company’s facility in Vijayanagar is the largest single-location steel manufacturing plant in India, with a current capacity of 17.5 mtpa. Through continuous investments in research, innovation, and technology partnerships, JSW Steel produces a wide range of high-value steel products used across sectors including infrastructure, automotive, construction, and appliances.
