Johnson Controls has announced the acquisition of Nantum AI, a New York-based company known for its artificial intelligence-driven solutions aimed at improving energy performance and operational efficiency in buildings. The move is intended to strengthen Johnson Controls’ digital platform, OpenBlue, by integrating advanced control algorithms that enhance system performance and reduce energy consumption.

The addition of Nantum AI’s technology is expected to expand OpenBlue’s capabilities by introducing a new layer of intelligent control across heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. These capabilities enable real-time optimisation of airflow based on occupancy patterns, allowing buildings to operate more efficiently while maintaining comfort levels.

The combined offering brings together central plant optimisation and air-side control, enabling a more comprehensive approach to managing energy usage across complex facilities. This is particularly relevant for large-scale environments such as hospitals, industrial campuses and manufacturing units, where energy demand is high and operational precision is critical. Initial pilot programmes for the integrated solution are currently underway.

Company leadership highlighted that digital intelligence is becoming a key driver of performance in modern infrastructure. The integration of AI-based tools is expected to support better decision-making, streamline operations and help customers manage energy usage more effectively while reducing costs and emissions.

With this acquisition, Johnson Controls is extending its capabilities beyond traditional building automation by introducing autonomous, data-driven control across both air and water systems. This approach allows operators to benefit from automated adjustments based on real-time data inputs, including occupancy trends, weather conditions and energy usage patterns.

Nantum AI’s technology has demonstrated the ability to deliver measurable energy savings, with some deployments achieving reductions of more than 10 percent. Its integration into the OpenBlue ecosystem is expected to further enhance performance outcomes by combining advanced analytics with deep domain expertise in building systems.

The expanded solution portfolio will also support improved control of air handling units, fans and related infrastructure, enabling more precise and responsive system management. By layering AI capabilities onto existing building automation frameworks, operators can achieve greater efficiency without compromising reliability or occupant comfort.

Nantum AI is part of Prescriptive Holdings, and its expertise in algorithm development complements Johnson Controls’ established presence in building technologies. The collaboration is expected to accelerate innovation and deliver scalable solutions for customers across sectors.

Through this acquisition, Johnson Controls continues to build on its strategy of integrating digital technologies with physical infrastructure, enabling smarter, more efficient and sustainable building operations in an increasingly energy-conscious environment. Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI) shapes environments where people thrive. With more than a century of innovation, the company leads in smart building systems that improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Its broad portfolio spans intelligent HVAC systems, digital platforms, building automation, fire and security, and end-to-end lifecycle services—serving industries from healthcare and education to data centres and industrial campuses. Through its OpenBlue suite, Johnson Controls delivers connected solutions that help clients meet performance goals while advancing environmental responsibility.
