Jindal Steel has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) to establish the Jindal Steel Centre of Excellence for High-Strength, Value-Added and Value-Engineered Steel Products and Solutions at the institute’s campus in Kandi, Sangareddy district, Telangana. The new Centre of Excellence will focus on developing, demonstrating and promoting advanced steel solutions for infrastructure, construction, engineering and strategic industrial applications. The initiative aims to increase the use of high-strength and value-engineered steel in projects where improved performance, lower material consumption and longer service life are important.
The Centre will bring together the technical and research capabilities of IITH with Jindal Steel’s manufacturing, metallurgical and engineering expertise. The partnership will focus on developing practical applications for advanced steel grades and demonstrating their benefits in real-world projects.
Potential applications will cover buildings and bridges, penstocks and large-diameter pipes, defence equipment, yellow goods and heavy machinery, power plants, refineries, transportation, heavy engineering and other critical industrial sectors. The Centre will also engage with designers, consultants, engineers, fabricators, EPC companies, equipment manufacturers and project developers. These interactions will help identify areas where advanced steel grades can replace conventional materials and deliver better performance.
High-strength and value-engineered steels can help reduce the quantity and weight of material required in certain applications while improving strength and durability. They can also support faster project execution and improved lifecycle economics. Under the agreement, Jindal Steel will establish a physical Centre at IITH for application development, technical demonstrations, training and knowledge exchange. The programme will include joint training sessions, workshops, technical symposiums, demonstration projects, internships, placements and academic modules. The Centre will also work with government agencies and other industry stakeholders to evaluate new applications and support wider adoption of advanced steel solutions in India.
V R Sharma, Managing Director, Jindal Steel, said the partnership with IIT Hyderabad would help expand the use of high-strength and value-engineered steel across India’s infrastructure and industrial sectors. “By combining IITH’s technical capabilities with Jindal Steel’s manufacturing, metallurgical and engineering expertise, the Centre will demonstrate solutions that are stronger, lighter, faster and more efficient across a wide range of applications. Our goal is to accelerate their adoption in real-world projects,” Mr Sharma said. Prof B S Murty, Director, IITH, said the Centre would strengthen the institute’s role in developing advanced engineering solutions and provide faculty and students with opportunities to work on industry-focused applications.
The initiative supports India’s broader focus on building efficient and sustainable infrastructure and developing advanced domestic manufacturing capabilities. Jindal Steel is an integrated steel producer with operations spanning mining, manufacturing and distribution. The company operates manufacturing facilities in Angul, Raigarh and Patratu and supplies steel products to infrastructure, construction, manufacturing and other industrial sectors.
Through its coal gasification initiatives, Jindal Steel is setting new benchmarks in the steel industry by combining innovation, resource optimization, and environmental responsibility. The approach reflects a broader commitment to supporting India’s industrial growth while advancing long-term sustainability goals.
