Jindal Steel has announced significant progress in advancing coal gasification technologies, reinforcing India’s push toward energy self-reliance while supporting more sustainable steel production. The company has achieved a global milestone by establishing India’s first coal gasification-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant, utilizing synthesis gas (syngas) as a cleaner alternative for iron-making. This development represents a major step in reducing dependence on imported fuels such as natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and propane.
Building on this achievement, Jindal Steel has successfully deployed syngas across multiple stages of the steelmaking process. The fuel is now being used in galvanising and colour coating line furnaces—an industry-first application—helping the company address fuel shortages while improving operational efficiency.
In addition, the company has introduced syngas injection into blast furnace operations, reducing reliance on imported coking coal and lowering carbon emissions per tonne of steel. This integrated approach to fuel substitution enhances both cost efficiency and environmental performance.
Coal gasification enables the conversion of domestic coal into cleaner-burning syngas, which can replace several imported inputs, including methanol, ammonia, and liquefied natural gas (LNG). By leveraging India’s abundant coal reserves, the technology supports reduced import dependency and improved energy security.
The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s policy direction, including the National Coal Gasification Mission, which aims to accelerate adoption of cleaner coal technologies. The combination of gasification with carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is expected to further reduce emission intensity and enhance global competitiveness.
Jindal Steel operates integrated steel manufacturing facilities across India, supported by a mine-to-metal business model. With a diversified product portfolio serving infrastructure, construction, and industrial sectors, the company continues to invest in advanced technologies to drive efficiency and sustainability.
Through its coal gasification initiatives, Jindal Steel is setting new benchmarks in the steel industry by combining innovation, resource optimization, and environmental responsibility. The approach reflects a broader commitment to supporting India’s industrial growth while advancing long-term sustainability goals.
