Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has commenced production at its newly acquired manufacturing facility in Talegaon, Maharashtra. Located within the MIDC Industrial Area of Pune district, the plant began rolling out passenger vehicles on October 1, 2025, with an annual installed capacity of 170,000 units.
The Talegaon facility carries a long legacy in India’s auto sector. First established by General Motors in 2008, it served as the production hub for Chevrolet vehicles, catering to both domestic and export markets. GM halted retail operations in India in 2017 but continued export production until 2020, after which the plant remained idle.
Hyundai purchased the facility in 2023, acquiring the land, equipment, and infrastructure. Following extensive upgrades and modernization to meet Hyundai’s global standards, the plant has been fully integrated into the company’s production network.
With Talegaon coming online, Hyundai significantly strengthens its manufacturing footprint in India. The company’s Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu already produces over 700,000 units annually. Combined with the new plant’s 170,000-unit capacity, Hyundai’s total installed capacity in the country now exceeds 870,000 vehicles per year, further consolidating its position as India’s second-largest carmaker.
Strategically located in western India, the Talegaon plant provides Hyundai with a key advantage for logistics and exports, particularly through the Mumbai and JNPT ports. It will play a crucial role in meeting growing domestic demand—especially for SUVs and compact models—while also serving export markets across Latin America, Africa, and Asia. The revival of the Talegaon facility from an idle GM asset into a state-of-the-art Hyundai production hub underscores the company’s long-term commitment to expanding capacity and supporting India’s role as a global automotive manufacturing hub.
