Honeywell has introduced a new infrared-based gas sensing solution designed to detect flammable hydrocarbon gases and improve safety across industrial operations. The newly launched 4-Series NDIR Hydrocarbon Gas Sensor uses non-dispersive infrared technology to identify gases such as methane, propane and butane. The solution is intended for use in industries including oil and gas, mining, petrochemicals and manufacturing, where early detection of hazardous gases is critical to protecting workers and infrastructure.

The sensor is engineered to be integrated into both fixed and portable gas detection systems, enabling continuous monitoring in environments such as refineries, underground mining operations and processing facilities. Its ability to deliver precise and reliable readings is expected to support timely alerts in potentially dangerous situations.

Designed for challenging operating conditions, the sensor can function effectively in environments exposed to dust, temperature fluctuations and moisture. An inbuilt condensation management feature helps maintain performance in humid and confined spaces, ensuring consistent detection accuracy.

Unlike conventional catalytic bead sensors that may degrade over time or become less effective due to exposure to contaminants, the infrared-based system offers high resistance to poisoning. This reduces the likelihood of sensor failure and minimises false alarms, contributing to improved operational reliability.

Another key advantage of the technology is its lower power consumption compared to traditional gas sensing methods. This feature helps extend the battery life of portable detection devices, making them more efficient for field use.

The introduction of this sensor reflects Honeywell’s continued focus on advancing industrial safety technologies. By combining domain expertise with innovation, the company aims to address evolving safety requirements across sectors that operate in high-risk environments.
