Hitachi Energy, a global leader in electrification, and Blykalla, an advanced nuclear technology company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore a strategic collaboration focused on optimising grid integration and electrical infrastructure for next-generation lead-cooled advanced modular reactors (AMRs).
The partnership brings together Blykalla’s innovative nuclear reactor technology with Hitachi Energy’s expertise in electrification, power systems, grid integration and energy software solutions. The collaboration aims to support the future deployment of reliable, fossil-free power generation technologies by developing integrated solutions for connecting advanced nuclear facilities to modern energy systems.
Under the MoU, the companies will work together on electrical and grid integration designs for Blykalla’s reactor technology, including transmission-level grid connections, on-site electrical systems and digital monitoring capabilities. The collaboration will also explore the development of a standardised solution offering that combines advanced modular reactor technology with Hitachi Energy’s electrical infrastructure expertise for customers requiring stable, high-capacity power.
Key areas of cooperation will include conceptual designs for grid connection and network integration, electrical architecture for reactor facilities, digital tools supporting construction and operations, and integrated solutions for energy-intensive sectors such as data centres and industrial facilities.
The partnership comes as global electricity demand continues to rise, driven by industrial electrification, digitalisation and the rapid expansion of data-intensive technologies. Advanced nuclear technologies are expected to play an important role in providing dependable, carbon-free baseload power that complements renewable energy sources and strengthens energy security.
Tobias Hansson, Country Managing Director of Hitachi Energy Sweden, said, “The increasing demand for electricity requires reliable, low-carbon power solutions that can be efficiently integrated into future energy systems. By combining Blykalla’s advanced reactor technology with our expertise in electrification and grid infrastructure, we aim to support solutions that enable industrial growth and accelerate the global energy transition.”
Jacob Stedman, CEO of Blykalla, said, “As we progress towards commercialisation, this collaboration strengthens our ability to deliver complete energy solutions. Hitachi Energy’s deep expertise in electrification makes them an ideal partner to help bring our technology to market and address the growing demand for clean, reliable power.”
Blykalla’s advanced modular reactor technology is based on proven lead-cooling principles and incorporates proprietary materials innovations, including patented aluminium-alloyed steels designed to withstand the corrosive properties of liquid lead. The technology builds on decades of research and development in Sweden, with the goal of enabling the commercial deployment of lead-cooled fast reactors.
