Hindustan Zinc Achieves Over 100,000 GJ in Energy Savings During FY25

Manufacturing-News

Hindustan Zinc Limited (NSE: HINDZINC), India’s sole integrated zinc producer and the largest of its kind globally, has reported energy savings exceeding 100,000 gigajoules in FY25, along with a reduction of more than 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. The update coincides with National Energy Conservation Day and underscores the company’s continued focus on energy efficiency and decarbonisation initiatives across its operations in Rajasthan.

The scale of these savings is significant. The energy conserved during the year is comparable to the annual electricity usage of nearly 19,000 households in India, based on government estimates that place average household consumption at approximately 1,538 kilowatt-hours per year. This comparison highlights how industrial efficiency measures can contribute meaningfully to national energy conservation while delivering real-world benefits.

Over recent years, Hindustan Zinc has rolled out a broad range of initiatives aimed at improving energy performance and lowering its environmental impact. These efforts include deploying variable frequency drives, upgrading to high-efficiency equipment, optimising smelting and thermal processes, and using artificial intelligence–based digital systems to enable real-time monitoring and control of energy consumption.

At the same time, the company has expanded its renewable energy footprint. In March 2025, Hindustan Zinc entered into a round-the-clock power delivery agreement with Serentica Renewables, a move that will increase its green power capacity to 530 MW. This supports the company’s target of sourcing 70 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by FY28 and aligns with its Science Based Targets initiative–validated roadmap and commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Commenting on the progress, Arun Misra, Chief Executive Officer of Hindustan Zinc, said the future of mining will be shaped not only by output, but by the responsibility and efficiency with which resources are produced. He noted that energy optimisation, electrified logistics, and renewable power are helping the company reshape mining operations for a lower-carbon future, while reinforcing its aim to set new global standards in sustainable mining.

These achievements build on a year of broader sustainability gains. Earlier in FY25, the company reported greenhouse gas savings of 670,000 tonnes, increased the share of renewable energy in its power mix to nearly 19 percent, and was ranked the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company for the third consecutive year by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment. Hindustan Zinc also became the first Indian company to join the International Council on Mining and Metals, reinforcing its leadership in responsible mining practices.

In support of behavioural change and energy awareness, the company recently launched “The Power of Less,” an internal campaign promoting mindful energy use. Activities under the initiative include No Vehicle Days, knowledge-based competitions, creative contests, and community engagement programs designed to encourage low-carbon habits among employees, their families, and surrounding communities.

Together, these actions reflect Hindustan Zinc’s ongoing transformation into a future-ready, multi-metal enterprise—one that supports India’s clean energy ambitions while contributing to the long-term economic development of Rajasthan.

Hindustan Zinc Limited (BSE: 500188; NSE: HINDZINC), a Vedanta Group company, is the world’s largest integrated zinc producer and ranks among the top five silver producers globally. The company serves customers in more than 40 countries and commands approximately 77 percent of India’s primary zinc market.

Recognised as the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company for the third consecutive year by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025, Hindustan Zinc is known for its strong ESG performance, operational excellence, and innovation. It became the first Indian company to join the International Council on Mining and Metals in 2025 and has introduced EcoZen, Asia’s first low-carbon zinc brand, produced using renewable energy with a carbon footprint significantly lower than the global average. Hindustan Zinc is also a certified water-positive company and remains committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner, while delivering meaningful social impact through its extensive community development initiatives.
