Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), a leading shipbuilding company under the Ministry of Defence, has signed five Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with key public and private sector organizations during the launch of the ‘Samudra Se Samriddhi’ initiative in Bhavnagar. The initiative, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is part of the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision, which aims to position India among the top five shipbuilding nations by 2047.

The agreements were signed with the Deendayal Port Authority (Kandla), Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (Kolkata), Indian Port Rail & Ropeway Corporation Ltd (IPRCL), the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), and Modest Infrastructure Private Ltd (MIPL). These partnerships are intended to facilitate joint development of projects in shipbuilding, port infrastructure, ship repair, and multimodal transport connectivity. Areas of focus include construction of low-emission vessels, green tugs compliant with GTTP specifications, and development of port-related civil and rail infrastructure.

Cmde PR Hari (IN Retd), Chairman and Managing Director of GRSE, stated that the shipyard’s participation supports national efforts toward strengthening indigenous shipbuilding capabilities. He emphasized the importance of collaboration across industry players to build an integrated maritime ecosystem aligned with India’s self-reliance and sustainability goals.

Established in 1884 and taken over by the Government of India in 1960, GRSE has a long-standing history in the maritime sector. It was the first Indian shipyard to construct a warship for the Indian Navy—INS Ajay, commissioned in 1961. The company has since built over 800 platforms, including 114 warships for the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and foreign clients. GRSE’s export portfolio includes vessels for Mauritius, Seychelles, and Guyana, making it the only Indian shipbuilder with four separate yards and the highest number of warships delivered to date.

Beyond naval construction, GRSE is also involved in manufacturing prefabricated steel bridges, marine engines, naval deck machinery, and small-caliber naval guns. The shipyard has received multiple awards for design innovation and performance, including recognition from the Ministry of Defence. With modernized infrastructure capable of simultaneously constructing 28 vessels and a skilled design workforce supported by advanced virtual and design tools, GRSE continues to expand its role in both defence and commercial shipbuilding.
