GAIL (India) Limited has approved an investment of ₹3,800 crore to develop 700 MW of solar power projects across Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, marking a major step forward in its renewable energy expansion strategy. As part of the initiative, GAIL will develop a 600 MW solar power project integrated with a 550 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the TUSCO Solar Park in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. The project will primarily cater to the captive energy requirements of the company’s petrochemical plant located in Pata, Auraiya district.
Additionally, GAIL will set up a 100 MW solar power project with a 22 MWh BESS in ChhatrapatiSambhaji Nagar district in Maharashtra. This facility will supply renewable energy to GAIL’s PDH-PP plant in Usar, Raigad district, supporting its industrial operations with clean and reliable power.
The integration of advanced battery energy storage systems will address the intermittency of solar power, enabling efficient energy utilization and ensuring round-the-clock availability of renewable energy for critical operations. These projects represent a significant milestone in GAIL’s journey toward achieving its net-zero targets, in alignment with India’s broader energy transition goals. Upon commissioning, the company’s total installed renewable energy capacity is expected to exceed 1,000 MW, a substantial increase from its current capacity of 147 MW.
Commenting on the development, Chairman and Managing Director Deepak Gupta stated that the expansion reflects GAIL’s commitment to aligning its growth with environmental sustainability while ensuring long-term energy security. He emphasized that the projects will strengthen the company’s position as an integrated energy player with a balanced portfolio of conventional and green energy assets.
