BYD has officially introduced its Blade Battery, a major advancement focused on raising the safety standards of electric vehicle batteries. At an online event titled “The Blade Battery – Unsheathed to Safeguard the World”, Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu emphasized the company’s commitment to solving long-standing safety concerns in battery technology.
A key demonstration during the launch was a nail penetration test, often regarded as one of the toughest safety evaluations in the industry. The Blade Battery passed without emitting smoke or flames, maintaining a surface temperature between 30°C and 60°C. In contrast, traditional ternary lithium batteries surpassed 500°C and caught fire under the same conditions.
Professor Ouyang Minggao from Tsinghua University and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences noted that the Blade Battery offers clear advantages in both safety and energy performance. Developed over several years, the Blade Battery arranges individual cells in a compact array that is directly inserted into the battery pack. This structure increases space utilization by over 50% compared to standard lithium iron phosphate batteries.
The battery also withstood a series of extreme stress tests—being crushed, bent, exposed to 300°C temperatures, and even overcharged by 260%—without causing a fire or explosion. He Long, Vice President of BYD and Chairman of FinDreams Battery Co., outlined its strengths: slow and minimal heat release, high resistance to thermal reactions, and no oxygen release during failure, greatly lowering fire risk.
He also criticized the industry’s narrow focus on increasing driving range at the expense of safety. According to He, the pursuit of higher energy density has led to compromises in battery safety. BYD’s Blade Battery shifts this focus back to safety without compromising performance.
BYD plans to collaborate with other manufacturers interested in using Blade Battery technology. Discussions with several global automotive brands are already underway. The upcoming Han EV, BYD’s premium sedan launching this June, will debut with the Blade Battery. The vehicle promises a driving range of 605 kilometers and 0–100 km/h acceleration in just 3.9 seconds, showcasing both performance and safety in one package.
