The Government of the Republic of Botswana and India-based KP Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly pursue large-scale renewable energy generation, energy storage and transmission infrastructure projects. The agreement marks a key step in Botswana’s clean energy ambitions and KP Group’s expansion into international markets.

Signed between Botswana’s Ministry of Minerals and Energy and KP Group entities — KPI Green Energy Limited, KP Energy Limited and KP Green Engineering Limited — the MoU sets out a framework for collaboration on planning, development and execution of renewable energy projects. The partnership aims to strengthen Botswana’s energy security while positioning the country as a regional exporter of clean power.

The proposed projects are expected to involve investments of approximately USD 4 billion (around Rs. 36,000 crore) and could add close to 5 GW of renewable energy capacity. The scope of collaboration also includes development and upgrading of high-voltage transmission networks within Botswana and enhanced cross-border interconnections to facilitate regional power trade.

A key component of the partnership is capacity building. KP Group will support 30 annual scholarships for Botswana citizens in renewable energy, engineering, sustainability and related fields, enabling skills development and knowledge transfer to support the country’s energy transition.

Hon Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy, said the agreement represents a meaningful step toward a secure and sustainable energy future, combining clean power deployment with economic growth and workforce development.

Dr Faruk G Patel, Founder and Chairman of KP Group, said the collaboration reflects a shared vision to harness Botswana’s strong solar and wind potential through scalable, sustainable solutions, supporting the nation’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030 while creating long-term economic value.

Under the MoU, KP Group will lead technical and commercial activities including feasibility studies, design, financing, construction, commissioning and long-term operations and maintenance, reinforcing its role as a global renewable energy developer. Founded in 1994 by Dr Faruk G Patel, KP Group has evolved into a multi-faceted conglomerate with a strong focus on renewable energy, infrastructure, and technological innovation.

With decades of experience, KP Group has played a pivotal role in advancing India’s green energy transition, leading successful projects in solar, wind, hybrid energy, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and green hydrogen. KP Group continues to be a trusted partner for businesses committed to reducing their carbon footprint and shaping the future of sustainable energy.
