BorgWarner Inc has secured a major commercial vehicle program with a leading European original equipment manufacturer to supply advanced variable turbine geometry turbochargers and exhaust gas recirculation coolers for a new Euro 7-compliant heavy-duty diesel engine platform. The business win strengthens BorgWarner’s position within the global on-highway commercial vehicle segment while further expanding its collaboration with the customer in advanced emissions and powertrain technologies. Production for the awarded program is expected to commence toward the end of 2028.
Under the agreement, BorgWarner will provide a high-efficiency VTG turbocharger along with an advanced exhaust gas recirculation cooler for a six-cylinder heavy-duty diesel engine designed primarily for long-haul truck applications.
The jointly developed technologies are intended to support higher engine performance, improved fuel efficiency and compliance with increasingly stringent Euro 7 emission standards across the European commercial vehicle market.
Commenting on the development, Dr Volker Weng, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc and President and General Manager, Turbos and Thermal Technologies, said the award further strengthens the company’s long-standing relationship with the customer and highlights BorgWarner’s expertise in delivering advanced engineering solutions for demanding commercial vehicle applications.
He stated that the project reflects the company’s ability to combine technology innovation, strong application engineering and competitive manufacturing solutions to support next-generation heavy-duty transportation platforms.
The awarded VTG turbocharger has been specifically engineered for the new diesel engine application and incorporates a customised cartridge and turbine housing design tailored to meet the platform’s operational requirements. Additional features include ball-bearing technology designed to improve transient response and enhance overall fuel efficiency. The system also incorporates a high-efficiency compressor configuration optimised for challenging long-haul operating conditions.
The exhaust gas recirculation cooler supplied by BorgWarner features an advanced internal plate architecture aimed at improving thermal management and exhaust gas recirculation performance. The design additionally incorporates a floating core structure intended to improve long-term durability under severe thermal cycling conditions typically encountered in heavy-duty trucking operations.
The company stated that the new solution has been developed to support commercial vehicle manufacturers in addressing stricter emission regulations without compromising engine performance, durability or operational efficiency.
The products for the awarded platform will be manufactured at BorgWarner’s facilities in Bradford, United Kingdom, and Vigo, Spain. According to the company, this production strategy aligns closely with the customer’s operational requirements while supporting efficient supply chain integration and regional manufacturing proximity.
BorgWarner has continued expanding its portfolio of advanced mobility technologies across electrification, combustion efficiency, emissions reduction and thermal management systems. The company supplies products and solutions for passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and industrial applications globally.
