Birla Carbon has commissioned a dedicated production line for Continua™ Sustainable Carbonaceous Material (SCM) at its manufacturing facility in Trecate, Italy. The new line is designed for finishing and packing Continua SCM, a circular material produced from end-of-life tires.
The commissioning of this line enables Birla Carbon to supply high-quality, consistent Continua SCM at scale, strengthening long-term supply reliability for customers across global markets. Continua SCM replaces a portion of conventional carbon black in a wide range of rubber and non-rubber applications while maintaining performance standards.
The raw material for Continua SCM is sourced from Circtec’s tire pyrolysis facility in the Netherlands, while processing and packaging are carried out at Birla Carbon’s advanced Trecate plant. This cross-industry collaboration supports circularity by reintegrating recovered materials into industrial value chains.
The expansion aligns with Birla Carbon’s sustainability roadmap, including its goal to enable the recovery and reuse of approximately 300,000 tonnes of end-of-life tires annually by 2030. It also contributes to the company’s long-term ambition of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The additional capacity enhances availability of Birla Carbon’s circular product portfolio, supporting customers in meeting sustainability targets without compromising on product quality or consistency. Continua SCM is designed to help manufacturers increase the share of sustainable materials in their formulations while meeting technical and regulatory requirements.
Birla Carbon currently offers Continua 8000 SCM and related variants for applications across tires, mechanical rubber goods, and plastics. With this latest investment, the company reinforces its commitment to advancing circular materials at an industrial scale while supporting customer sustainability initiatives worldwide. Birla Carbon is a leading global producer of advanced carbon-based solutions, delivering high-performance materials to customers worldwide.
