Alstom, through its joint venture with Indian Railways, Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Limited (MELPL), has secured a five-year contract to maintain WAG-12B electric locomotives at Indian Railways’ Sabarmati locomotive depot. The €62 million contract covers maintenance services for the remaining 300 locomotives yet to be delivered under the original 800-locomotive order awarded to Alstom in 2015.

The agreement includes both scheduled and breakdown maintenance to meet stringent availability and reliability requirements until February 2031. The scope of work covers material supply, washing of locomotives, logistics support, and the use of remote diagnostic systems.

This new contract adds to MELPL’s existing maintenance operations at the advanced depots in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and Nagpur, Maharashtra, where the first 500 locomotives are currently serviced using modern technologies to ensure high operational uptime. Commenting on the development, Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India, said the continued partnership reflects the confidence Indian Railways has placed in MELPL and Alstom’s maintenance capabilities, built through close collaboration over the past decade.

Under Alstom’s FlexCare Perform programme, the contract also provides for the deployment of Prompt Response Teams at key locations. These teams will be equipped with specialised tools and essential spares to ensure rapid intervention and reduced downtime. The agreement further includes ongoing skill development initiatives, under which more than 22,000 Indian Railways personnel have already been trained.

The WAG-12B Prima T8 locomotives are part of a €3.5 billion contract for 800 high-powered, 12,000 HP, fully electric double-section locomotives capable of hauling freight loads of up to 6,000 tonnes. These locomotives play a significant role in supporting India’s shift toward greener and more efficient freight transportation by reducing emissions and increasing haulage capacity.
