Alstom, a global leader in sustainable mobility solutions, has secured a €538 million (NZD $1.065 billion) contract with the Greater Wellington Regional Council. The contract covers the design, production, and delivery of 18 Adessia Stream B battery-electric multiple unit (BEMU) 5-car trains, as well as 35 years of ongoing FlexCare Perform fleet maintenance. These will be the first BEMU commuter trains in New Zealand, designed to operate on non-electrified segments of the Wellington rail network, specifically on the Wairarapa and Manawatu lines, providing emission-free travel.

The trains will be manufactured at Alstom’s Savli facility in India, replacing the aging diesel locomotives that are set for retirement in 2028 and 2029. Additionally, Alstom will operate a new maintenance facility in Masterton, developed by the Greater Wellington Regional Council, which will be equipped with the latest technology to support the trains’ battery maintenance and ensure optimal fleet performance.

Ling Fang, President of Alstom’s Asia-Pacific region, commented “This project marks a significant milestone in Alstom’s commitment to advancing sustainable mobility. We’re excited to support New Zealand’s transition to greener technologies with our zero-emissions rail solutions.”

Pascal Dupond, Managing Director of Alstom Australia and New Zealand, added “We’re proud to partner with the New Zealand government and local stakeholders to introduce Alstom’s advanced rail and maintenance solutions. This contract will not only enhance the region’s transport infrastructure but also provide an environmentally friendly, modern, and comfortable service to the people of Wellington.”This contract also signifies Alstom’s first entry of zero-emission rail technology into the Asia-Pacific region, reinforcing its commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
