ABB has strengthened its long-standing association with Kolkata Metro by providing advanced electrification and motion control technologies that support the safe, efficient and reliable operation of the city’s growing metro rail network. As one of India’s most important urban transportation systems, Kolkata Metro continues to expand its reach to meet rising commuter demand while supporting sustainable mobility goals. Spanning approximately 72 kilometers and operating more than 300 train services daily, the network serves over 500,000 passengers every day, helping reduce road congestion and improve urban connectivity across the metropolitan region.

ABB’s technology solutions have been deployed across multiple metro stations, tunnels and operational facilities to support critical infrastructure requirements. The installations include low-voltage and medium-voltage gas-insulated switchgear, distribution boards, lightning protection systems and variable frequency drives designed to ensure dependable power distribution, optimize available space and enhance operational continuity.

In addition, ABB’s dedicated HVAC drive solutions play a key role in controlling ventilation and cooling systems throughout the metro network. These systems help maintain passenger comfort, ensure effective air circulation and support emergency smoke extraction functions when required. The deployment of energy-efficient drive technologies has also contributed to significant reductions in energy consumption, with savings averaging around 25 percent across relevant applications.

Over the past two decades, ABB has partnered with Kolkata Metro across various phases of network development, supplying technologies tailored to the operational requirements of both underground and elevated corridors. The company’s solutions have been integrated into several major sections of the metro system, including the Sealdah–Phoolbagan, Joka–Majerhat and Barun Sengupta–Nazrul Tirtha corridors, as well as key stations such as Dakshineswar, Baranagar, Shahid Khudiram and Jai Hind Bimanbandar, India’s largest underground metro station.

Kiran Dutt, President, Electrification, ABB India, said that efficient and intelligent technologies are becoming increasingly important as India accelerates investments in modern urban transportation. He noted that ABB’s solutions are supporting metro rail operations across a large portion of the country’s transit networks and continue to contribute to the development of sustainable, future-ready infrastructure through locally manufactured technologies.

The deployment of ABB’s electrification and automation portfolio supports multiple aspects of metro operations, ranging from power management and infrastructure reliability to energy efficiency and passenger safety. As Kolkata Metro continues to expand, these technologies will play an important role in strengthening operational performance and supporting the city’s long-term public transportation objectives.
