ABB has made a strategic minority investment in Gridcog, a UK-based energy software company, to enhance digital capabilities that support the development and deployment of next-generation energy projects, including renewable generation, energy storage, industrial microgrids, distributed energy resources (DERs), alternative energy procurement strategies and energy-as-a-service solutions.

The partnership will enable ABB customers to design, evaluate and optimize complex energy projects with greater visibility into financial performance, operational feasibility and carbon impact from the earliest stages of planning. Financial details of the investment have not been disclosed.

As electrification accelerates and renewable energy continues to expand its share of global power generation, energy systems are becoming increasingly interconnected and complex. Businesses are seeking flexible, decentralized energy solutions that require advanced technical, financial and environmental analysis to support informed investment decisions.

Gridcog’s digital platform provides rapid scenario modeling, simulation and project analysis capabilities, enabling businesses to develop transparent and data-driven business cases for renewable and energy transition initiatives across different markets, regions and asset types. The platform helps customers assess both economic outcomes and emissions impact, supporting the development of credible net-zero strategies.

Commenting on the investment, Stuart Thompson, President of ABB’s Electrification Service division, said, “By combining Gridcog’s modeling capabilities with ABB’s energy advisory expertise and microgrid engineering capabilities, we can help customers accelerate the journey from concept to implementation. Together, ABB and Gridcog will support businesses in navigating a rapidly evolving energy landscape, reducing emissions and unlocking greater value from distributed energy resources.”

The collaboration strengthens ABB’s innovation ecosystem by connecting software, hardware and services to deliver more integrated and scalable energy solutions. It is focused on supporting commercial and industrial customers seeking technology solutions that deliver both sustainability benefits and economic value.

Fabian Le Gay Brereton, CEO of Gridcog, said, “ABB’s investment highlights the growing importance of advanced modeling in managing increasingly dynamic energy systems. Gridcog is focused on helping customers make confident decisions by providing transparency into the financial and carbon impact of complex energy projects. Together with ABB, we can help businesses move faster from planning to implementation.”

ABB is leading the latest funding round, alongside AXPO, DNV and Verbund Ventures, while Albion and Clean Energy Finance Corporation continue as key shareholders. The investment has been made through ABB Electrification Ventures, the venture capital arm of ABB’s Electrification business area, reinforcing ABB’s commitment to partnering with innovative companies advancing productivity, efficiency and sustainability.

Since 2021, ABB Electrification Ventures has invested more than $110 million in 16 startups. ABB Ventures, ABB’s group-wide venture capital unit established in 2010, has invested approximately $500 million in startups aligned with ABB’s electrification, automation and motion businesses.

ABB is a global technology leader in electrification and automation, enabling a more sustainable and resource-efficient future. By combining engineering expertise with digital technologies, ABB helps industries improve performance while becoming more efficient, productive and sustainable. With more than 140 years of history and approximately 110,000 employees worldwide, ABB’s shares are listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange (ABBN) and Nasdaq Stockholm (ABB).

Gridcog is a digital platform for modeling energy flexibility, enabling energy professionals to develop, invest in and operate projects supporting the energy transition.
