Material Matters: How AMPCO METAL Focuses on Thermal and Wear Applications in Tooling?

In the die and mould industry, performance is not driven by design and machining alone; materials play an equally critical role. From managing heat dissipation within mould cavities to ensuring durability in moving components, the right alloy selection directly impacts cycle time, tool life, and overall productivity. This is where companies like AMPCO METAL add value, with their focus on application-specific copper-based alloys designed to meet both thermal and wear requirements. In an interaction with Machine Maker, Tushar Pawar, National Sales Head at AMPCO METAL India, shares insights into the company’s legacy, its presence in India, and its focus areas for TAGMA Die & Mould India 2026.

Headquartered in Switzerland, AMPCO METAL is a leading international manufacturer and integrated distributor of specialty copper alloys and engineered products, with a legacy spanning more than 100 years. Founded in 1914 in the United States, the company has played a pioneering role in the development and application of aluminium bronze alloys and in introducing advanced metallurgical and process technologies. Over the decades, AMPCO METAL has established itself as a recognised quality leader in speciality bronzes and copper alloys, serving global industries with solutions that combine wear and corrosion resistance with high thermal conductivity.

Serving a wide range of sectors, including chemical and petroleum, machine tools, primary metals, transportation, and industrial machinery, AMPCO METAL continues to focus on delivering consistent and application-driven performance. The company leverages advanced manufacturing equipment, skilled engineering expertise, and stringent quality control systems to ensure superior lot-to-lot consistency and predictable results. The company is participating in TAGMA Die & Mould India 2026, scheduled from 23–26 April 2026 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, Mumbai, where it aims to connect with customers, showcase its alloy portfolio, and strengthen its engagement with toolmakers and industry stakeholders.

Building India Operations with Material Supply and Machining Capabilities

“AMPCO Metal is known as the founder of aluminium bronze. Most of our alloys are proprietary alloys, which means they are made to serve specific applications, based on wear or thermal conductivity requirements,” says Tushar Pawar. AMPCO METAL operates globally, serving industries such as aerospace, oil & gas, automotive, and general engineering, particularly in applications involving wear and performance.

AMPCO METAL established its presence in India in 2012, marking the beginning of its direct engagement with the Indian manufacturing sector. “AMPCO decided to have its own setup in India, and that’s where the journey of AMPCO Metal India began. I have been part of the company since its foundation,” shares Tushar Pawar.

The India operations are centred on supplying materials and offering value-added services, such as machining, based on customer requirements. “Customers in India require the material for their applications, but from time to time, they also demand value-added services like machining. That’s why we invested in machining capabilities,” he says.

With a facility spanning more than 25,000 square feet in Jharkhand, the company has developed the capability to deliver both machined components and raw materials. “We have around 10 CNC machines, including vertical machining centres, turning centres, and CNC wire cutting machines, along with a strong sales force to stay close to our customers,” he adds.

Product Focus for Die & Mould Applications

For the die and mould segment, AMPCO METAL is focusing on its high-conductivity copper alloy range, which is widely used in applications where heat dissipation is critical. “We have this AMPCO alloy, which is high conductive copper alloy material. This is basically used for die and mould applications because of the high thermal conductivity,” says Mr Pawar.

The materials include beryllium copper, beryllium-free copper (copper-nickel-silicon), and other high-performance alloys such as copper-chrome-zirconium. “These alloys are used in moulds like blow fill seal moulds and other applications where thermal conductivity is important,” he explains.

In addition to thermal applications, the company is also addressing wear-related requirements within tooling systems. “Since a die and mould also have many moving parts, we have wear components as well, which will be part of what we showcase,” he adds. This combination allows AMPCO METAL to meet both thermal and wear-related requirements in the die and mould ecosystem.

“This covers the entire requirement for the die and mould industry, whether it is in mould cavities or as part of a machine,” Tushar Pawar notes.

Participation at TAGMA Die & Mould India 2026: Staying Connected with Customers

For AMPCO METAL, participation at TAGMA Die & Mould India 2026 is primarily about staying connected with its customer base and strengthening relationships within the die and mould ecosystem. “The most important objective is to stay in touch with our customers, because we know most of our customers would be looking forward to visit this exhibition,” says Mr Pawar.

The exhibition serves as a platform for continued engagement with existing customers offering an opportunity to reconnect, discuss ongoing requirements, and align on future applications. “We want to brush up our dialogues and our meetings with the existing customers,” he adds.

At the same time, TAGMA provides access to a wider industry network, including potential customers who are either visiting or participating as exhibitors. “We also take advantage of this exhibition to meet new customers or potential customers, which are largely in the form of exhibitors,” Tushar Pawar notes.

With over a century of experience in copper-based alloys and a growing presence in India, AMPCO METAL continues to work closely with manufacturers across industries. Its participation at TAGMA Die & Mould India 2026, scheduled from 23–26 April 2026 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, Mumbai, reflects a continued effort to engage with customers, understand application needs, and support the evolving requirements of the die and mould industry through its specialised material solutions.
