ABB has secured additional large orders from VoltaGrid to support global data center projects, strengthening their collaboration in delivering advanced power infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI) applications. The agreement was signed on March 25, 2026, in Houston during CERAWeek. The orders are expected to be recorded in the second quarter of 2026.
Under the agreement, ABB will supply 35 synchronous condensers equipped with flywheels, along with prefabricated eHouse units. These systems will play a critical role in stabilizing power supply for data centers operating high-density AI workloads.
Synchronous condensers are designed to maintain grid stability by providing instantaneous inertia, supporting short-circuit conditions, and regulating voltage through reactive power management. This ensures consistent and reliable operation of data centers, which require uninterrupted power to support advanced computing applications. ABB’s scope also includes medium- and low-voltage distribution infrastructure and excitation systems to enhance system reliability and uptime.
Nathan Ough, CEO of VoltaGrid, stated that the company’s power platform is engineered to deliver large-scale, high-performance energy solutions tailored for digital infrastructure. He noted that integrating ABB’s grid stabilization technologies enables faster deployment while meeting stringent performance requirements for AI-driven applications. VoltaGrid’s modular power solutions are designed for efficiency, reduced noise, and compact deployment, making them suitable for rapidly scaling data center operations.
Per Erik Holsten, President of ABB’s Energy Industries division, said the extended collaboration highlights the combined strengths of ABB’s automation, electrification, and motion technologies. He emphasized that the partnership will help deliver resilient and scalable energy infrastructure to support the expanding AI economy.
With data centers accounting for a growing share of global electricity consumption, the need for stable and efficient power systems continues to rise. ABB supports this demand through advanced electrification, automation, and digital solutions that improve performance and sustainability.
With over 140 years of engineering expertise and a global workforce of approximately 110,000 employees, ABB delivers technologies that help industries operate more efficiently and sustainably. Through its Automation business, the company supports critical sectors including energy, water, manufacturing and transport, helping organizations improve performance while reducing environmental impact.
