NXP Semiconductors has unveiled the CoreRide Z248 zonal reference system, a new hardware-software platform designed to help automakers accelerate the development of next-generation vehicle electrical and electronic architectures. The solution integrates advanced 48-volt energy distribution with intelligent data routing, offering a pre-validated design foundation for software-defined vehicles.

The CoreRide Z248 platform combines hardware and software elements that support modern vehicle architectures where processing functions are consolidated into zonal electronic control units. By providing a pre-integrated system, the platform aims to reduce development complexity, shorten validation cycles and support faster transition from concept to production.

The reference system is built on NXP’s S32K5 microcontroller series and incorporates integrated MRAM technology designed to support rapid and frequent over-the-air software updates during a vehicle’s operational life. This capability enables automakers to deploy feature updates and performance improvements more efficiently.

At the software level, the platform includes a pre-validated software stack that simplifies development of smart data energy network functionalities. These include monitoring of power distribution, impedance management, system protection, intelligent data routing, diagnostics and audio processing.

The system also includes an integrated remote protocol stack that allows vehicle manufacturers to consolidate functions from multiple electronic control units into centralized architectures. This approach supports the industry’s transition toward zonal systems that improve efficiency and reduce wiring complexity within vehicles.

Energy management is another key focus of the Z248 system. The architecture integrates energy conversion, power distribution and circuit protection functions within a unified platform. These capabilities are designed to address the challenges associated with 48-volt electrical systems that are increasingly being adopted in modern vehicles.

Extensive validation testing has been conducted on the reference system, including thousands of system-level test scenarios. The results demonstrate efficient low-power operating modes along with rapid boot and wake-up performance required for automotive applications.

The development environment supporting the platform incorporates continuous integration, testing and delivery processes. This collaborative framework allows automakers and Tier-1 suppliers to accelerate development cycles by enabling faster testing and validation during the engineering process.

Automotive manufacturers are facing increasing pressure to deliver more advanced vehicle technologies while controlling development costs and timelines. The growing complexity of hybrid power systems, AI-enabled features and software-defined vehicle architectures has significantly increased system design requirements.

The CoreRide Z248 platform is intended to address these challenges by providing a scalable architecture capable of supporting multiple vehicle platforms, including internal combustion engine vehicles, hybrid systems and battery electric vehicles. Sébastien Clamagirand, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Automotive Systems and Platforms at NXP Semiconductors, said the new reference system is designed to help the automotive ecosystem adapt to rapidly evolving electrical and electronic architectures.

The platform is delivered with a comprehensive board support package that includes software components from NXP’s CoreRide partner ecosystem. These include performance monitoring tools from GLIWA, software development tools from Green Hills Software and embedded software solutions from Vector.

The system architecture also integrates a range of automotive networking and power management technologies, including Ethernet PHY connectivity, CAN transceivers, power management integrated circuits, eFuse protection and DC-DC converters capable of supporting 48-volt vehicle systems.

Additional features include integrated audio capabilities and a modular approach to zonal input and output expansion, allowing the system to support various vehicle configurations. With the introduction of the CoreRide Z248 zonal reference system, NXP aims to provide automakers with a scalable and validated foundation for implementing zonal processing architectures while supporting the broader shift toward software-defined vehicles.
