Microchip Technology Introduces LX4580 Mixed-Signal IC for Aviation and Defense Actuation Systems

manufacturing news

Microchip Technology (Nasdaq: MCHP) has introduced the LX4580, a highly integrated 24-channel mixed-signal integrated circuit designed to simplify high-reliability actuation control systems used in aviation and defense platforms. The new device consolidates several functions typically handled by multiple discrete components into a single integrated solution. By combining sensing, monitoring and motor control capabilities within one chip, the LX4580 helps reduce system size, weight and design complexity.

Developed for demanding environments, the device supports applications such as More Electric Aircraft (MEA), guided defense systems, drones and launch platforms. The IC is packaged in a compact 144-pin LQFP form factor and integrates multiple sensing and control functions required for advanced actuation systems.

Key capabilities include pressure sensing, temperature measurement, PWM motor drive outputs, current sensing, Hall-effect sensor inputs, dual LVDT and resolver interfaces, and dual high-speed SAR analog-to-digital converters. This combination enables synchronized data acquisition and precise control across multiple sensors and actuators within complex systems.

According to Ronan Dillion, Director of Microchip’s High-Reliability and RF Business Unit, the LX4580 significantly simplifies system architecture for engineers designing mission-critical platforms. “The LX4580 integrates an exceptional range of functionality in a single device, enabling customers to streamline designs that previously required several integrated circuits,” Mr Dillion said. “By lowering system complexity and offering robust development tools, we are helping engineering teams accelerate the development of next-generation actuation systems.”

The device also incorporates a redundant architecture designed for safety-critical applications that require high levels of fault tolerance and predictable performance. By replacing multiple components—including microcontrollers, ADCs, DACs, driver ICs and regulators—the solution reduces wiring complexity and circuit board space.

These design advantages support industry efforts to minimise system weight while meeting stringent reliability and certification requirements in aerospace and defense applications. To support product development, Microchip is providing application documentation demonstrating integration with its microcontroller platforms. The company has also introduced the LX4580-EVB evaluation board, which includes a breakout module enabling access to both SPI buses and internal functions for detailed system testing.

Additional documentation illustrates how the device can be used with Microchip’s SAMV71 microcontroller in a linear actuator control system, where the MCU manages motor control while the LX4580 processes sensor data. The new platform is intended to help developers accelerate design cycles while meeting the performance and reliability requirements of next-generation aerospace and defense systems.
