BorgWarner Inc has been awarded a major program by a premium European original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to supply an 800V Integrated Drive Module (iDM) for a Range Extended Electric Vehicle (REEV), with mass production slated to begin in 2029. This milestone underscores BorgWarner’s leadership in electric drive systems and its ability to deliver highly integrated propulsion solutions for next-generation vehicles.
The iDM combines BorgWarner’s advanced single-electric-machine design with dual functionality as both generator and drive unit. It interfaces seamlessly with critical components, including an inverter, dual clutches, and a dual-mass flywheel, while being system-level paired with the customer’s internal combustion engine. The module supports energy-efficient generator operation and an all-wheel-drive mode when required, consolidating multiple REEV functions into a single compact unit.
The inverter leverages BorgWarner’s next-generation Viper power switches and dual-side cooled power module technology, specifically engineered for high-performance electric drive applications. This configuration ensures excellent electrical efficiency, robust thermal management, and the ability to meet demanding high-voltage and high-current requirements, while optimizing vehicle packaging and performance.
“Securing this program award highlights BorgWarner’s expertise in electric drive technology and system integration,” said Dr Stefan Demmerle, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc and President and General Manager, PowerDrive Systems. “Our team in China, working alongside our global network, has delivered a highly integrated solution that balances performance, efficiency, and space utilization. We are proud to provide our customer with innovative technology for its next-generation range-extended vehicles.”
BorgWarner’s approach combines in-house capabilities across electric motors, drivelines, power electronics, software and controls, and full system integration. This vertical integration allows the company to deliver flexible, customer-tailored solutions with proven product quality and strong local manufacturing support.
The award reinforces BorgWarner’s commitment to advancing vehicle electrification and supporting the growth of the global new energy vehicle market. By offering high-efficiency, integrated propulsion systems, BorgWarner enables OEMs to achieve superior performance, reduced emissions, and scalable electrification solutions for the next generation of hybrid and electric vehicles.
