Jindal Steel has brought a new 250-tonne Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) into operation at its Angul plant in Odisha, adding 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of crude steel capacity. With this addition, the integrated steel facility now has a total capacity of 9 MTPA—moving closer to its stated target of reaching 12 MTPA within the current financial year.

The first steel from the new BOF has already been tapped, marking the successful commissioning of the new unit alongside Blast Furnace 2. This coordinated startup strengthens the plant’s end-to-end production capabilities, allowing for uninterrupted flow of steel into downstream mills.

“The BOF is operational and the first heat has been tapped. This expansion gives Angul a significant boost and strengthens India’s ability to meet its own steel needs,” said Naveen Jindal, Chairman of Jindal Steel. The expanded capacity will support increased demand across sectors such as infrastructure, automotive, oil & gas, construction, and real estate. The new BOF is part of Jindal Steel’s broader plan to scale up production using modern, high-capacity equipment and integrated operations.

The Angul plant is a key part of Jindal Steel’s long-term strategy to support India’s push for self-reliance in core industries. By increasing domestic output, the company aims to reduce reliance on imports and meet the growing needs of national development projects.

Jindal Steel follows a mine-to-metal approach—backed by captive raw material sources, modern manufacturing lines, and a strong logistics and distribution network. The company operates major production sites at Angul, Raigarh, and Patratu, along with other operations across India and Africa.

With investments exceeding USD 12 billion, Jindal Steel supplies a wide range of high-grade steel products that serve key industries and infrastructure projects. The company continues to focus on operational efficiency, sustainable growth, and technology upgrades across all its facilities.
