Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has expanded its operational Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity at Khavda, Gujarat, to 6.63 GWh from 3.55 GWh in June 2026. With this expansion, AGEL now accounts for more than half of India’s operational BESS capacity, which stands at around 12.6 GWh.
The 6.63 GWh installation at Khavda is integrated with AGEL’s renewable energy development in the region. The company is developing a 30 GW renewable energy plant across 538 square kilometres of barren land at Khavda. AGEL achieved the 6.63 GWh storage milestone within 14 months of starting on-site BESS construction at Khavda. The latest addition was commissioned within 10 months of construction beginning.
The scale of the battery storage facility is designed to support the integration of renewable power into the electricity grid. The 6.63 GWh system can store enough clean energy to meet the daily electricity needs of around two million homes. It can also support peak electricity demand in cities such as Nagpur, Patna or Visakhapatnam for several hours.
The storage capacity is also equivalent to the battery capacity of more than 150,000 mid-sized electric vehicles. According to the company, the facility can store enough energy each day to meet almost twice the estimated daily electricity requirement of the Delhi Metro.
Battery storage systems help renewable energy projects store electricity when generation is high and supply it when demand rises. They can also support grid stability, manage peak demand, reduce renewable energy curtailment and improve the availability of clean electricity.
Sagar Adani, Executive Director, Adani Green Energy, said, “Reaching 6.63 GWh of operational battery storage in just 14 months is a significant milestone for AGEL and India’s clean energy transition. At this scale, storage can make renewable power firmer, more reliable and dispatchable when the grid needs it. As India’s power demand grows, we will continue to scale energy storage solutions, both, battery and pumped storage to support a more resilient, lower-carbon grid.”
The Khavda BESS uses lithium-ion battery technology along with an Energy Management System and automated telemetry. These systems manage charging and discharging, monitor operations and support efficient use of stored electricity. AGEL said advanced project controls, digital monitoring, construction management practices and partnerships with global BESS original equipment manufacturers helped the company execute the project within the planned timelines while maintaining safety and quality standards.
The company is targeting more than 10 GWh of additional BESS capacity during FY2026-27. AGEL has set a longer-term target of reaching 50 GWh of storage capacity over the next five years and is also developing pumped storage projects. AGEL currently has an operating renewable energy portfolio of 20.76 GW and 6.63 GWh of battery storage across 12 states. The company has set a target of reaching 50 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
