Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) Gdynia, part of International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI), has strengthened its container handling capabilities with the commissioning of two Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes. The investment supports the terminal’s ongoing expansion programme and reinforces its position as one of the Baltic region’s leading container gateways.
The new LHM 550 cranes have been delivered under an EU-funded tender and were commissioned on schedule in June 2026. Configured specifically for container handling, the cranes complement BCT Gdynia’s existing fleet of two Liebherr LHM 400 units, ensuring operational consistency, simplified maintenance and greater familiarity for crane operators.
Designed to improve productivity while supporting future sustainability goals, each crane offers an outreach of up to 54 metres and is equipped with Liebherr’s Pactronic hybrid energy storage system to optimise energy consumption during intensive cargo operations. The cranes are also prepared for future electric-drive integration, allowing the terminal to transition to fully electric operations as its long-term strategy evolves.
The equipment has been engineered to match the terminal’s quay infrastructure, including specially designed support pads suited to berth conditions. Before commissioning, both cranes successfully completed an eight-hour endurance test, demonstrating reliable performance under continuous operating conditions.
Commenting on the expansion, Wojciech Szymulewicz, Chief Executive Officer of Baltic Container Terminal Gdynia, said, “These new cranes strengthen our operational flexibility and support our long-term development plans. As cargo volumes continue to grow and vessel sizes increase, this investment will enable us to provide efficient, reliable services while further improving connectivity between maritime transport and inland logistics.”
BCT Gdynia has served as a key logistics hub since container operations began at the terminal in 1979 and has been part of ICTSI since 2003. Today, the facility handles approximately one million TEU annually and serves as a major gateway for cargo moving across Poland, the Baltic region and Central Europe through extensive rail and road connections. Recent infrastructure upgrades have enabled the terminal to accommodate container vessels of up to 400 metres in length, with future expansion expected to increase annual handling capacity to between 1.2 million and 1.6 million TEU.
The latest investment forms part of a broader modernisation programme that includes new ship-to-shore cranes, rubber-tyred gantry cranes, terminal tractors and digital operating systems aimed at improving efficiency and supporting evolving environmental standards.
Andreas Müller, Managing Director of Liebherr-Rostock GmbH, said, “Our long-standing partnership with Baltic Container Terminal Gdynia has been built on technical collaboration and mutual trust. Delivering this project on time reflects our shared commitment to operational excellence and provides a strong foundation for future cooperation as the terminal continues its expansion.”
With growing cargo volumes, expanding intermodal connectivity and continued investment in port infrastructure, the addition of the two LHM 550 cranes positions BCT Gdynia to meet rising customer demand while supporting the long-term development of maritime logistics across the Baltic region.
