Known for its high-precision components and systems, Schaeffler India has consistently contributed to the country’s motion technology advancement. At the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025, held at the Yashabhoomi International Exhibition Centre in New Delhi, Schaeffler India showcased its latest innovations and strategic initiatives to transform India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem.

During the expo, Harsha Kadam, Managing Director & CEO of Schaeffler India, sat down with Hari Shanker, Managing Editor of Machine Maker, to discuss the company’s role in the evolving automotive landscape. The interview provided valuable insights into Schaeffler’s technological advancements, local manufacturing efforts, and commitment to workforce upskilling.

Embracing the EV Ecosystem

Harsha Kadam began by acknowledging the significant shift in the automotive industry from internal combustion (IC) engines to electric mobility. He highlighted that Schaeffler, a global leader in motion technology, has been at the forefront of this transformation. Traditionally known for its high-precision components and systems for IC engines, Schaeffler has expanded its portfolio to include a comprehensive range of products for electric mobility. This includes motors, e-axles with integrated power electronics, and various sensors essential for EV applications.

Schaeffler’s journey into electric mobility is not a recent development. The company has been building its competencies in this area through both organic growth and strategic acquisitions. Harsha Kadam mentioned the recent merger with Esco, which significantly enhanced Schaeffler’s product offerings in the EV space. This merger has brought a broader portfolio that complements Schaeffler’s existing capabilities, positioning the company as a key player in the electric mobility market.

Local Manufacturing and Innovation

As Harsha Kadam pointed out, one of the critical challenges in the EV market is achieving economies of scale. The relatively slow growth of the EV market in India poses a dilemma for manufacturers regarding where and when to invest. However, Harsha Kadam emphasized that Schaeffler is committed to staying ahead of the curve by exploring innovative business and manufacturing models. The company is actively working on localizing the production of EV components in a phased manner. Initially, certain components like e-axles will be imported, but as the market matures and volumes increase, Schaeffler plans to ramp up local manufacturing.

Harsha Kadam’s vision for Schaeffler in India is to be ready to ride the wave of growth in the electric mobility space. By localizing production, Schaeffler aims to reduce dependency on imports, lower costs, and enhance the competitiveness of its products in the Indian market. This strategic approach aligns with the government’s push for ‘Make in India’ and ensures that Schaeffler remains a relevant and significant player in the evolving automotive landscape.

Workforce Upskilling and Automation

Beyond technological advancements and local manufacturing, Harsha Kadam highlighted the importance of upskilling the workforce in the face of increasing automation and digitalization. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of automation in the manufacturing sector, and Schaeffler is no exception. Harsha Kadam explained that the level of automation being integrated into their manufacturing processes is profound. It goes beyond merely attaching sensors to machines; it involves creating interconnected systems where machines can communicate with each other, thereby enhancing efficiency and productivity.

Schaeffler has already implemented advanced robotics and cobotics in its plants in Hosur and Pune. These automated systems have taken over many manual operations, significantly improving production efficiency and reducing scrap. However, Mr Kadam quickly pointed out that automation does not mean job losses. Instead, Schaeffler is committed to upskilling its employees, preparing them for the next level of technological transformation. By investing in employee training and development, Schaeffler ensures its workforce can handle new challenges and contribute to the company’s growth.
