Biswadev Sengupta, the Founder and Managing Director of Phoenix Technoprojects share his experiences and the challenges.
Wholistic Solutions: Participative approach with Real-time Monitoring
Founded in the year 2015, Phoenix Technoprojects started as a small initiative with a much larger vision. Since then Phoenix Techno Projects has grown to offer solutions, which are ‘wholistic’ in nature – a perfect blend of technical, commercial, management, and systems approach that fall in line with their client’s need.

Mr. Sengupta has over 28 years of experience in the manufacturing industry in both Auto and Non-Auto sectors. Having worked in senior positions at popular companies like Tata Motors, TML Drivelines Ltd, Ring Plus Aqua Ltd, Raymond Limited- JK Files India Ltd, Hi-Tech Gears Ltd and Varroc Engineering Ltd, etc., Mr. Sengupta started the venture of Technical and Project Consulting to share his rich experience and knowledge and support the industry to grow their business and substantially improve profitability.
“We believe that consulting is more than giving advice. We do consult paired with implementation to realize the benefits from the improvements,” says Mr. Sengupta. At Phoenix, every project is handled with a specially designed approach that follows a participative approach with real-time monitoring of projects with sustainable implementation. Substantial improvements both tangible and intangible become visible during the project execution. The benefits accrued from the improvements provided by Phoenix give their clients a decisive edge over their peers in the market.
Implementation Specialists: Re-engineer & Design Business Processes

“We consider ourselves more as 'implementation specialists' rather than 'recommendation consultants’. All our assignments are implementation-based projects. We believe in 'whatever it takes' to overcome the obstacles and get the desired results,” added Mr. Sengupta. Their benefits-linked implementation contracts are a win for both their clients as well as a win for themselves.
Phoenix’s emphasis is on developing long-term relationships and a consultative style of functioning, so that advice and suggested solutions are practical and based on the understanding of both the business and people’s issues. “Every world-class organization believes that its target is not just to make a profit but to identify the real potential of the profit in the organization and continuously strive to achieve it,” says Mr. Sengupta. Their services include Business Strategy Consulting, Business Development & Sourcing, Engineering Consultancy Services, Engineering Design Services, New Product Development, and more.
Phoenix helps its clients to re-engineer and design the business processes and functions to improve the bottom-line and offer the full basket of solutions. In one of the projects executed recently, they have created a new milestone by improving productivity by 90 % in CNC machining application through specially designed cutting tools for their client in Aurangabad. They have also helped their client to develop a new product for electromechanical application within a record time of 2 months.
Indian SMEs Vs Low Profitability Margins & Cost Pressure
Phoenix experienced some typical challenges in their journey with their clients. “SMEs and MSMEs in India are having some common challenges. These include inadequate exposure to new developments and technology and lack of direction and guidance to frame the future strategy and vision. Limited ability to invest and plan for the future and interrupted cash flow. This also affects their production. The other big challenge for clients – dependency on a single customer or very few customers leading to exploitation,” he said.
“Limited resources for Engineering, Sourcing & Business development and lack of organized systems and processes also threaten their expansion and growth. Finally, typically low profitability margins and cost pressure makes it essential for them to innovate to be successful.” “Phoenix joins hands with the clients facing the above situations and shows them the right path to growth,” said Mr. Sengupta.
COVID19: Automation is the Future
The COVID19 situation has affected all corners of the manufacturing industry including the service sector. Phoenix was also not spared. As Mr. Sengupta said, “Like all other firms, it has affected our firm also in terms of business revenue. We did undertake some cost rationalization measures in order to manage our profitability. We used the time during lockdown to upgrade ourselves and also shared knowledge with our clients by conducting webinars every week.” To keep up with the current changes of the world, Phoenix has shifted most of their meetings and reviews to the virtual mode and have also developed some new clients in Bangladesh, Tanzania, and Taiwan during this period, which are some positives that they gained during this period.
Phoenix believes the right blend of technology and automation is necessary to create the future. Their mantra is “do not live only with present and survive, but work continuously for the future”. It helps control cost, reduce wastages, and ensures consistent product quality. “Running after production numbers will just let you survive, but investing in new technology, automation, and process optimization will create your future and make the business robust and sustainable. It is like improving the immunity of a human body by taking regular care and doses of multivitamins and health supplements,” added Mr. Sengupta.
Phoenix is continuously striving to help SMEs to become self-reliant or “Atmanirbhar” in the true sense. Phoenix provides support to develop products, create the best strategy for the future, streamline existing processes, optimize costs, and focus on the growth of their clients. Indirectly, they help to create new jobs and opportunities for the new generation. “We support “Make in India” through our import substitution projects which we take up for our clients,” explained Mr. Sengupta.
