On the occasion of World Nature Conservation Day, Vedanta Group, one of the world’s leading natural resources, energy and technology companies, announced that it generated and utilised nearly 400 crore (4 billion) units of clean energy during FY2025-26. The achievement reflects the company’s continued focus on reducing its environmental footprint while advancing long-term sustainability across its operations.
Vedanta’s clean energy initiatives have helped avoid a cumulative 3.6 crore tonnes of carbon emissions since FY2020-21, comparable to removing nearly 80 lakh passenger vehicles from the road for one year. The company continues to integrate environmental responsibility into its growth strategy through investments in low-carbon technologies, resource efficiency and ecosystem conservation.
As part of its roadmap to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier, Vedanta has significantly expanded the use of renewable energy. During FY2025-26, renewable power consumption increased by nearly 450 percent compared with FY2020-21, while emissions intensity across its metals and mining businesses declined by nearly 14 percent. The company’s decarbonisation strategy is centred on improving operational efficiency, adopting cleaner fuels, increasing renewable energy use and investing in nature-based carbon sequestration initiatives.
Water stewardship remains another key pillar of Vedanta’s environmental programme. During the year, the company recycled and reused more than 8.5 crore cubic metres of water, meeting nearly 40 percent of its operational water requirements through recycling. This volume is equivalent to the annual domestic water needs of approximately 50 lakh Indian households. Vedanta has also developed more than 100 water conservation structures, including rainwater harvesting systems, check dams, settling ponds, aquifer recharge projects and watershed restoration initiatives to improve water security in and around its operational areas.
The company is also scaling ecosystem restoration through large-scale afforestation. Since 2021, Vedanta has planted more than 40 lakh trees across its business locations. A participant in the World Economic Forum’s 1t.org initiative, the company continues to support global efforts to restore forest cover. At several sites, native species are being planted using the Miyawaki method to create dense forests that improve biodiversity and ecological resilience.
Vedanta is further strengthening biodiversity conservation through scientific assessments and site-specific Biodiversity Management Plans aligned with its No Net Loss and Net Positive Impact framework. These initiatives include habitat restoration, wetland and mangrove conservation, elephant corridor protection, invasive species management and long-term ecological monitoring carried out with community participation.
