Valeo has secured a contract with a leading premium car manufacturer to supply a next-generation imaging radar system designed to support hands-free, eyes-off driving features in passenger vehicles. This radar will be used in vehicles equipped with conditionally autonomous driving systems, expanding the operational range at high speeds and enhancing the vehicle’s ability to detect and respond to road hazards. The system’s capabilities represent a key step forward for automated driving technologies classified under SAE Level 3.
Valeo will handle the full development, validation, and manufacturing process for the radar system. The technology meets the highest standards in durability, safety, and performance required for advanced driver assistance systems.
Marc Vrecko, head of Valeo’s Brain Division, noted, “This project marks a significant milestone in the evolution of automated driving. By combining imaging radar with high-resolution cameras and LiDAR, we enable vehicles to operate without supervision at highway speeds, up to 130 km/h, even without a vehicle in front to follow.”
The imaging radar system has been engineered to support scenarios where traditional radar falls short, offering the precision and reliability needed for high-speed autonomous driving. It will function as part of a sensor suite that includes LiDAR and cameras, enabling advanced decision-making and environmental awareness.
Valeo brings experience from its work on LiDAR systems already in use for Level 3 autonomous vehicles, and will apply that expertise to ensure the radar meets the latest standards in functional safety, cybersecurity, and system reliability. Production will be carried out through Valeo’s global manufacturing network. This new system will become part of Valeo’s broader portfolio for driver assistance and automation, which includes sensors, software, and control units tailored to support next-generation vehicle autonomy.
