United States Steel Corporation (US Steel) has announced a $28.3 million investment to upgrade the pickle line at its Great Lakes Works facility in Michigan. The project includes the installation of a fibre-optic laser beam welder and dual-entry shears designed to improve operating efficiency and support reliable steel production.

The company has received the first of the two upgrades, with the laser beam welder delivered to the facility. The dual-entry shears are scheduled to be installed during a 30-day production outage beginning in October. The new equipment will introduce updated technologies to the pickle line, which processes steel by removing surface scale before further manufacturing operations. The dual-entry shears will be capable of serving two passlines, supporting the line’s operating requirements.

The investment forms part of US Steel’s efforts to modernise its manufacturing facilities and improve production processes through equipment upgrades. The company expects the project to provide employees with access to modern tools and additional opportunities to develop technical skills.

David Burritt, President and Chief Executive Officer of US Steel, said the investment would provide employees with modern equipment and training while supporting the long-term future of steelmaking in Michigan. “When we invest in our people, we invest in the future of US Steel,” Burritt said.

Employee development is included in the project plan. Workers will receive three-dimensional virtual training before the new equipment is installed, followed by practical skills development on the job. The training is intended to help employees prepare for the introduction of the upgraded systems and work effectively with the new technology.

Scott Buckiso, Executive Vice President and Chief Manufacturing Officer of US Steel’s North American flat-rolled segment, said the project was another example of the company’s efforts to strengthen its facilities through modern technology. The upgrades are expected to support more reliable operations while equipping employees with the skills needed to operate the new systems. The company has positioned the investment as part of its broader approach to maintaining manufacturing capabilities and improving production performance.

US Steel operates steelmaking and finishing facilities serving customers across a range of industrial sectors. Its flat-rolled steel products are used in applications including automotive manufacturing, construction, energy and industrial equipment. The Great Lakes Works pickle line investment combines equipment modernisation with employee training, with the laser beam welder and dual-entry shears forming the main components of the $28.3 million project.
