TotalEnergies, as operator with a 40% interest, and its partner AMNI, which holds the remaining 60%, have taken the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the development of the Ima gas field in Nigeria. The Ima field is located in shallow waters across the OML 112 and OML 117 offshore licences, close to Bonny Island. The development will use a single platform connected by a 22-kilometre pipeline to Nigeria LNG, in which TotalEnergies holds a 15% interest. Production is expected to start in 2028.
The field is expected to reach a production plateau of 350 million cubic feet per day, equivalent to more than 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. Once operational, Ima is expected to supply about one-third of the gas required for the ongoing Nigeria LNG Train 7 expansion.
The Train 7 project will increase Nigeria LNG’s liquefaction capacity from 22 million tonnes per annum to 30 million tonnes per annum. The Ima development is therefore expected to add to the gas supply available for Nigeria’s LNG operations. TotalEnergies said the Ima project has been designed as a low-cost and low-emissions development. The development will use a simplified platform design and electricity supplied from shore. It will operate without routine flaring and will include permanent methane detection and monitoring systems.
The project is being developed with Nigerian company AMNI and will have a strong focus on local participation. TotalEnergies said all key contractors involved in the project are local companies. Around 60% of the workforce during the development phase is expected to be sourced from communities in the project’s host areas.
“We are very pleased to announce the FID for the Ima gas project, marking a new milestone in the deployment of our integrated gas strategy in Nigeria. After the Ubeta project sanctioned in 2024 and expected to start up next year, Ima demonstrates again our ability to unlock new low-cost and low-emissions gas resources, following the incentives introduced by the Nigerian Gov rnment for non-associated gas developments,” said Nicolas Terraz, President, Exploration & Production, TotalEnergies. “This new project will contribute significantly to Nigeria LNG gas supply and create lasting value for its partners and for Nigeria,” he added.
TotalEnergies has operated in Nigeria for more than 60 years and currently employs more than 1,800 people across its businesses in the country. Nigeria produced 188,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day for TotalEnergies in 2025, making it one of the company’s major hydrocarbon-producing countries. The company also operates an extensive distribution network in Nigeria, including about 540 service stations. TotalEnergies said it continues to work with local communities and focus on socio-economic development through its activities in the country.
