Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd, one of India’s foremost rolling stock manufacturers, has successfully rolled out its first driverless, indigenously built trainset for the Ahmedabad Metro. The rollout took place at the company’s advanced Passenger Rail Systems facility in Uttarpara, West Bengal, and marks a significant milestone for the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC).
The occasion was graced by Bhupendrabhai Patel, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat, who described the project as a key contributor to Gujarat’s fast-paced urban mobility ambitions. He was accompanied by his Principal Advisor, Hasmukh Adia, and SS Rathod, Advisor and Managing Director of Gujarat Metro Rail.
Addressing the gathering, the Hon’ble Chief Minister said the rollout reflects the successful realisation of the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. He highlighted that Titagarh’s diverse workforce, representing talent from across the country, exemplifies national integration while delivering world-class rail infrastructure. He also noted that sustained infrastructure investment, particularly in rail-based transport, has accelerated metro expansion across India, with operational metro networks growing several-fold over the past decade and transforming urban mobility.
Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd, said the company is proud to deliver a driverless metro trainset designed and manufactured in India. With nearly 70–75 percent local value addition, the trainsets underscore the growing maturity of India’s domestic manufacturing ecosystem. He added that the achievement reflects Titagarh’s focus on engineering excellence, disciplined execution, and innovation, while reinforcing its commitment to support Gujarat’s development through efficient and sustainable mobility solutions.
The trainsets feature stainless steel car bodies that are lightweight, durable, and resistant to corrosion, contributing to improved energy efficiency and long-term sustainability. They will operate on the Yellow Line corridor connecting Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar over 23.8 km, along with the Violet Line branch from Gujarat National Law University to Pandit Deendayal Energy University and GIFT City, covering an additional 5.4 km. Together, the elevated network spans 28.26 km and connects 22 stations.
Equipped with advanced Train Control and Management Systems, the trains are designed for fully driverless operations. Passenger comfort and safety have been prioritised, with ergonomic interiors, modern amenities, and dedicated spaces for Persons with Reduced Mobility to ensure inclusive access. The interiors also incorporate a Garba-inspired design theme, reflecting Ahmedabad’s cultural identity.
During his visit, the Hon’ble Chief Minister toured the manufacturing facility and appreciated Titagarh’s infrastructure and capabilities, stressing the importance of scale and speed in nation-building. He also took note of the facilities developed for Vande Bharat train manufacturing. Mr. Chowdhary shared Titagarh’s future roadmap, including capacity expansion and plans to develop high-speed train manufacturing capabilities.
