Thales has introduced File Activity Monitoring (FAM), a new feature within its CipherTrust Data Security Platform, aimed at improving real-time oversight and protection of unstructured data across enterprise environments. Unstructured data—such as emails, media files, chat logs, and application data—makes up the vast majority of digital information worldwide, yet remains one of the most difficult areas to monitor and secure. With FAM, organizations can now track file-level activity in real time, helping to detect unauthorized access, misuse, and other high-risk behaviors.

Thales’ new solution provides detailed visibility into how sensitive files are accessed, copied, downloaded, or shared, offering security teams advanced alerts, analytics, and incident tracking capabilities. The tool is designed to support compliance with global data protection laws, including GDPR, HIPAA, and PCI DSS, while strengthening overall data security.

“Unstructured data continues to grow rapidly across multiple platforms, from on-premises systems to multicloud environments,” said Todd Moore, Vice President of Data Security Products at Thales. “This launch gives organizations the ability to respond faster, detect threats more accurately, and reduce the complexity involved in managing data security.”

The File Activity Monitoring tool offers robust capabilities designed to enhance data security and compliance. It enables real-time tracking and classification of sensitive information across both cloud and on-premises environments, providing clear visibility into file access, storage locations, and usage. The tool incorporates behavioral monitoring to detect suspicious or unauthorized activities, helping organizations respond proactively to potential threats.

Additionally, it supports encryption and maintains detailed audit logs, allowing security teams to investigate incidents thoroughly and implement corrective actions effectively. Thales is expanding its expertise from structured data protection to include this new layer of visibility for unstructured information—an area often overlooked in traditional security strategies.

Leila Kuntar, Principal Information Security Engineer at Amadeus, noted, “FAM helps close visibility gaps in complex hybrid environments. With real-time alerts and integrated analytics, it allows our team to prioritize actual risks and avoid being overwhelmed by false positives.”

The new platform also includes a Data Security Assistant, which uses a built-in chat interface to help users generate audit reports, answer compliance-related questions, and manage security tasks using simple queries. This assistant is designed to reduce the time and effort needed for investigations and compliance reviews.

“With the growing demands on IT and security teams, we’ve made sure this solution can scale without increasing the burden,” Mr Moore added. “Streamlined workflows and smart automation are essential for modern data protection.”
