Tejas Networks and Qualcomm Technologies are demonstrating Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) technology at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026, showcasing how wireless networks can be used for environmental sensing alongside conventional connectivity services. The demonstration highlights the potential of ISAC to support the development of next-generation networks as the telecommunications industry moves towards 6G. The technology uses communication signals to detect and track objects in the surrounding environment, including moving vehicles on roads and drones in strategic areas, without requiring separate sensing infrastructure.

The joint showcase combines Tejas Networks’ 5G base station with Qualcomm Technologies’ Radio Unit (RU) and Distributed Unit (DU) chipsets. Low-power computing and artificial intelligence inference capabilities support the demonstration, enabling connectivity and sensing to operate on a common infrastructure platform.

ISAC could support applications such as vehicle and drone tracking, traffic management, public safety, industrial automation, smart-city operations and critical-infrastructure monitoring. By integrating sensing capabilities into wireless networks, the technology could allow operators to provide services beyond data connectivity and deliver real-time information about the surrounding environment.

The demonstration also illustrates how existing 5G infrastructure could be developed to support future sensing-based services. Combining network connectivity with AI-driven analytics could help organisations process environmental information and make decisions based on changing conditions.

Dr Kumar N Sivarajan, Chief Technology Officer of Tejas Networks, said, “ISAC is emerging as one of the most promising technology directions for future 6G networks. By integrating communication and environmental sensing within the same network infrastructure, ISAC unlocks transformative applications across transportation, public safety, industrial automation, smart cities, and defence. This ability to generate and monetize spatial intelligence also enables a significant new value proposition for mobile operators, extending their role beyond high-speed connectivity to providing real-time environmental insights for commercial and strategic use cases.”

Rajen Vagadia, President, Qualcomm India, said, “Strong industry partnerships are essential to translating the vision for 6G into practical capabilities. Our collaboration with Tejas Networks demonstrates wide-area sensing on live 5G infrastructure, showing how wireless networks can extend beyond connectivity to deliver realtime intelligence about their surroundings. For Qualcomm, this marks an important step in India’s journey towards 6G, laying the foundation for sensing-based services that can create new value for operators and support more informed decision-making across industries.”

Tejas Networks designs and manufactures wireline and wireless networking products for telecommunications service providers, internet service providers, utilities, defence organisations and government agencies in more than 75 countries. The company is part of the Tata Group, with Panatone Finvest, a subsidiary of Tata Sons, as its majority shareholder.

Qualcomm Technologies develops semiconductor products, computing platforms and connectivity technologies for a range of industries. The collaboration with Tejas Networks demonstrates how these capabilities could contribute to the development of sensing-enabled wireless infrastructure for future 6G networks.
