Laser Power & Infra Limited (LPIL) has received a Letter of Intent from CESC Limited for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) works valued at ₹44 crore. The project covers a distribution station and underground cabling works in CESC’s operational areas and is scheduled for completion by March 2027.

The order includes turnkey execution of the Kabitirtha Distribution Station and 33 kV and 220 kV underground cable projects. A key part of the assignment is a 220 kV underground cable circuit connecting West Bengal State Electricity Transmission Company Limited’s (WBSETCL) Howrah Substation with CESC’s Botanical Garden Substation.

The project marks Laser Power & Infra’s entry into the 220 kV underground transmission cable segment, expanding the range of specialised power infrastructure projects the company can undertake.

Commenting on the order, Deepak Goel, Chairman and Managing Director of Laser Power & Infra Limited, said the contract represented an important addition to the company’s EPC capabilities. He said the 220 kV cable component would provide the company with an entry credential in a specialised segment where technical expertise and execution experience are important requirements.

Demand for extra-high-voltage underground transmission infrastructure is expected to increase as cities expand and available land becomes more constrained. In densely developed urban areas, overhead transmission projects can face right-of-way restrictions, challenges in crossing critical infrastructure and limitations on extended power shutdowns. Underground cable systems can provide an alternative in locations where overhead lines are difficult to install.

Mr Goel said successful completion of the CESC project would strengthen Laser Power & Infra’s ability to pursue similar contracts and broaden its addressable market. The company plans to use the project to build its experience in specialised underground transmission work, alongside its existing activities in power transmission, distribution, renewable energy and infrastructure.

Laser Power & Infra has more than three decades of experience in the power infrastructure sector. Its operations include manufacturing cables, conductors and related products, as well as executing EPC projects for customers in India and international markets.

The company operates manufacturing facilities at strategic locations and supplies products to utilities, EPC contractors and industrial customers. Its combination of manufacturing and project execution activities supports its work across different segments of the power infrastructure market.

The CESC contract adds a new voltage category to the company’s project portfolio and provides an opportunity to establish execution experience in underground extra-high-voltage transmission systems. The order is expected to be completed by March 2027, subject to the project’s execution requirements. It also supports Laser Power & Infra’s strategy of expanding into specialised infrastructure segments as investment in transmission and distribution networks continues.
