Tata Steel has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) to accelerate the development of low-carbon steelmaking technologies. The agreement reflects a shared commitment to driving sustainability and innovation in the global steel industry.
The collaboration will focus on four key areas: scrap-based steelmaking, steel waste valorisation, end-product performance, and carbon capture and utilisation technologies. Research teams from Tata Steel, Tata Steel Research and Innovation Limited, and USTB will work jointly to develop and scale solutions that reduce carbon emissions while maintaining product quality and operational efficiency.
USTB’s advanced academic expertise and pilot-scale facilities will play a crucial role in testing and validating emerging technologies for potential industrial application. The partnership builds on a long-standing relationship between the two institutions and aims to accelerate the transition toward greener steel production through cross-border collaboration.
Subodh Pandey, Vice President – Technology at Tata Steel, emphasized that low-carbon steelmaking is essential for the future of the industry. He noted that innovation remains central to Tata Steel’s sustainability strategy and that the collaboration with USTB will help unlock new technological pathways to achieve environmental goals.
Representatives from USTB also highlighted the significance of the partnership, pointing to the university’s strong track record in metallurgy, materials science, and low-carbon technologies. The institution has been instrumental in advancing China’s steel industry and continues to play a key role in global research initiatives.
Founded in 1952 and widely known as the “Cradle of China’s Steel Industry,” USTB is a leading research university with extensive capabilities, including multiple national laboratories and engineering research centers. It maintains collaborations with over 270 institutions worldwide and has contributed to numerous technological breakthroughs in the field.
For Tata Steel, the agreement reinforces its broader sustainability ambitions, including its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2045. The company continues to invest in innovation, digital transformation, and responsible production practices, positioning itself at the forefront of efforts to build a cleaner and more sustainable steel industry.
