Tata Steel’s Kalinganagar plant has completed ten years of operations, celebrating a decade of industrial progress, technological advancement, and deep community engagement. Since its commissioning in 2015, the facility has grown into one of India’s most advanced steel-making hubs, setting new standards in safety, productivity, digital excellence, and sustainability.

What began with a capacity of 3 MTPA has now expanded to 8 MTPA, supported by investments exceeding ₹50,000 crore — the largest organic expansion project ever undertaken by Tata Steel. The plant also houses India’s biggest blast furnace, reinforcing its strategic importance. By producing more than 100 grades of steel domestically, Kalinganagar has significantly strengthened India’s self-reliance and eased dependence on imports.

Reflecting on the milestone, TV Narendran, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Steel, said “Kalinganagar represents a turning point for us — a place where our legacy met our future. It tested us, united us, and showed how innovation, sustainability, and growth can move forward together. As we mark ten years, I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Odisha government, our communities, employees, partners, and everyone who stood with us throughout this journey.”

Kalinganagar holds a distinctive place in Tata Steel’s history. For decades, Odisha’s rich mineral reserves mainly fuelled the Jamshedpur plant. The establishment of TSK changed this dynamic by bringing world-class steel production directly to Odisha. In the past decade alone, Tata Steel has invested over ₹100,000 crore in the state, making it its largest investment destination in the country.

The plant has gained global visibility for its early adoption of smart manufacturing. The World Economic Forum recognised TSK as India’s first manufacturing unit — and the world’s second — to be named an Advanced Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) Lighthouse.

Sustainability is a core pillar of TSK’s approach. A third of the facility is reserved as green cover, and the plant runs as a Zero Effluent Discharge site with 100% solid waste utilisation. Its efforts were further validated in 2024 when it earned the prestigious ResponsibleSteel™ certification for responsible and ethical manufacturing.

TSK has also emerged as a champion of inclusive employment. Nearly 30% of its workforce comprises women, Persons with Disabilities, LGBTIQA+ employees, and individuals from Affirmative Action communities.

Beyond its industrial achievements, TSK has played a transformative role in regional development. Through the Tata Steel Foundation, the plant’s initiatives have reached more than 14 lakh people over the past decade. Its support includes education through institutions like Loyola School, healthcare through the 100-bed Tata Steel Medica Hospital, and livelihood creation for local groups such as the Navjeevan Cooperative, which empowers women artisans and supports over 100 families. Looking ahead, Tata Steel Kalinganagar is set for its next phase of expansion and is on track to grow into a 16 MTPA complex — continuing its mission to innovate, lead, and uplift the communities around it.
