Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power utilities, has announced the launch of the Energy Insights & Innovation Lab (EIIL) at its headquarters in Mumbai. The new research-led initiative will focus on applying advanced analytics, real-world data, and experimental approaches to strengthen India’s clean energy transition while enhancing the reliability, quality, and affordability of electricity for consumers.

The Lab has been set up in collaboration with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the International Growth Centre (IGC), a global research institution headquartered at LSE. EIIL will work on some of the most critical challenges facing India’s power sector, including peak demand management and the large-scale integration of renewable energy in line with the country’s net-zero ambitions.

The facility was inaugurated by Dr Praveer Sinha, CEO and Managing Director, Tata Power; Prof Robin Burgess, Professor of Economics at LSE and Director of IGC and the EEE Research Programme; and Dr. Jonathan Leape, Executive Director, IGC, in the presence of HM Harjinder Kang, Trade Commissioner for South Asia and British Deputy High Commissioner for Western India. Dr Chetan Ghate, Professor at ISI and IGC ISGH, was also present at the event.

The launch coincided with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Tata Power, LSE, and IGC to jointly develop scalable, evidence-driven solutions for the power sector, drawing on global best practices and rigorous research. EIIL will combine behavioural science, data analytics, and energy system modelling to design and test solutions that can be deployed at scale. A key focus area will be pilot programmes using smart meter and IoT data to strengthen demand-side management and improve grid stability. The Lab will also examine how data-driven insights and consumer behaviour analysis can help flatten peak electricity demand in urban households, easing pressure on distribution networks without compromising comfort.

Over time, the partners aim to evolve EIIL into a broader innovation platform with expanded funding, deeper institutional linkages, and a wider mandate. This will include support for tariff design, regulatory processes, consumer flexibility frameworks, distributed renewable energy, and energy equity initiatives.

A dedicated team of analysts will operate from Tata Power’s Mumbai office, working closely with researchers from LSE and IGC. The collaboration represents a strong UK–India partnership model, combining international academic expertise with on-ground industry experience. While LSE and IGC contribute global research capabilities, Tata Power brings operational scale, access to a diverse consumer base, and a long-standing focus on innovation and sustainability.

The International Growth Centre is a global research organisation with leading academics, country teams across Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East, and a portfolio of international policy initiatives. It is based at the London School of Economics and Political Science and works in partnership with the University of Oxford, with primary funding from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

The Tata Power Company Limited, part of the Tata Group, is a leading integrated power company with a diversified capacity of 15.9 GW across renewable and conventional generation, transmission, distribution, trading, energy storage, and solar cell and module manufacturing. With 7.0 GW of clean energy capacity—around 44% of its total portfolio—Tata Power is a key contributor to India’s energy transition. The company has set a target to achieve Net Zero by 2045 and serves approximately 13 million customers across the country through partnerships
